Default Memphis recommendations, please.

Hello, Tennessee!

My girlfriend has an engagement in Memphis next week and has invited me to tag along. I'll be visiting your great state for the first time and I don't want to miss anything that I'll regret not seeing, so I'm hoping for some advice about what to see and do and where to eat.

I would also appreciate some advice on where to stay. Specific hotels or just best general areas would help a lot.

Thanks for helping me out with this.

~sweetness~

I don't live in Memphis anymore, but when I did, the Poplar/I-240 area had good hotels.
If you like barbecue, Central Barbecue on Central has what I think is the best pork BBQ sandwich in town.

Will you be entertaining a few almost good men or just sightseeing?

Thanks for the advice! I've gotten some emails making the same recommendations regarding where to stay, but this is my first BBQ suggestion. I think I'll have to take you up on both tips. I do love a good pork BBQ sandwich!

There aren't many sights I would rather see than a few almost good men. Pork BBQ sandwiches come in a distant second place.

Really? Most everyone I know who prefer pulled pork sandwiches mention Payne's in that category.

Central BBQ is excellent, though The Bar-B-Q Shop on Madison in Midtown has something Central doesn't: the endorsement of Nobel Laureate Bob Fuckin' Dylan himself.

If you take the hotel recommendation given you, though, the flagship Central location (on Central Ave.; Central BBQ has three locations in Memphis) is probably the closest to those hotels. Midtown (and the Bar-B-Q Shop) would be a bit farther away.

As for barbecue, though, ask 10 random Memphians where the best 'cue in the city is, and you'll probably get 10 different answers. In addition to Central and The Bar-B-Q Shop, you'll also hear recommendations for Jim Neely's Interstate Barbecue, Payne's, the Germantown Commissary, and Cozy Corner. And probably a lot of other places that I'm not remembering right now.

Enjoy the visit.

Cheers,

bcg

Bluffcityguy, you forgot Tom's. I may not live in Memphis, but there for business ALOT. I stay down in Southaven though.

I'll be there Sunday night actually for the week.

No, I didn't. In order to forget Tom's, I would have had to know about the place first, and I didn't; your mention here is the first I've heard of it (I'm not a huge Guy Fieri fan, so that probably explains that ). I'll have to venture to one of the locations and try it sometime (since you stay in Southaven, I presume you've frequented the Horn Lake location).

Speaking of Horn Lake, I've heard good things of the Memphis Barbecue Company; I'll need to try that one sometime, too. The problem is my meanderings rarely get me into DeSoto County; I tend to drive through there rather than drive there.

Cheers,

bcg

Memphis BBQ Company in Southaven sucks. Payne's for the win.

I have to admit, I have not been to Payne's. I'll have to try it.
Caitie, if you enjoy your stay in Memphis, I hope you consider including Nashville if you come back to Tennessee.

Default So many options!

It looks like I'll have to make at least a couple of trips to Memphis, just to sample the BBQ. I have a feeling the the fine, southern gentlemen of the great state of Tennessee will have no trouble luring me to Nashville in no time.

BCG, you forgot One and Only, Leonards and Jerry Lawler, the King.

Enjoy your trip Caitie Mae. There's more BBQ joints in Memphis than quality Providers so you should do just fine.

No, haven't been to Horn Lake one. I stay there, but work at Presidents Island. And Memphis Barbeque Company sucked.

Just went through Jonesboro!! Almost there!

I do plan on enjoying my trip, thanks, and the BBQ, too.

Thanks for all the BBQ recommendations! Now, how about where to stay? I've been looking at hotels online tonight. Good lord! Memphis is proud of it's hospitality industry! Holy smokes! I'm very likely going to be booking an express deal rather than choose the hotel myself... I've asked a couple of people privately, but I'll ask here, too: Any recommendations for the area I should choose? How's downtown? Graceland?

On the other hand, my girlfriend enjoys games of chance, so the Horseshoe Tunica Casino might be appealing for her. What's the scoop on that place? Decent? Safe? How's the location? Too far out of the way?

Excellent write up Start here: https://www.eccie.net/showthread.php?t=2012032

Tunica is about 45 - 60 minutes away from Wolfchase area. Many don't have that kind of window to play with.
