Sitting aside the politics of the situation for a moment, let me share my (a former US Army officer) perspective of this situation. The first "rule of thumb" taught in Officer Candidate School (OCS) is very simple and basic. Your Commanding Officer might not always be correct but he (she) is always the Commanding Officer. General McChrystal's comments to Rolling Stone were extremely unprofessional and quite frankly immature. The General would not have tolerated such behavior from his subordinates. Why should he expect anything different from the Commander-in-Chief?
From the outset it is instilled in officers that disagreement should be aired in a private sitting with the clear understanding that the final decision will always be made by the appropriate ranking officer.
When in doubt, resort to the following:
Rank has its privileges!
It is not in the best interest of the military establishment to have soldiers openly and wantonly questioning the motives and decisions of their superior officers!
