ICU was making an analogy between Puerto Rico and Taiwan. The "PITA" part was satirical. I suspect he believes America shouldn't send troops to Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Based on past referendums, I suspect if you gave Puerto Ricans three choices, statehood, independence or status quo, you wouldn't get a majority voting for any of the three.

Regarding the Taiwan situation, does anyone remember the speed and severity of the sanctions applied to Russia in the wake of the Ukraine invasion?
I ask because China is a massive importer of food, energy, fertilizer, etc, unlike Russia who are largely self sufficient in those areas.
If Xi invades Taiwan and the world hits China with Russia level sanctions, China can expect their industrial base to collapse within months, followed closely by a famine that will kill many, many millions.

I think the last time the regime got scared there was when babies were dying from formulae that was poisoned and when childeren were crushed in goverment schools when an earthquake hit (that showed they were built shoddy with someone taking the funds that were skimmed from doing a proper job.)
