The uneasiness might be just because it's somewhere new. I still get it sometimes even now and i'm super seasoned in touring lol (esp Iowa). While the brown and black population combined is maybe 10% (I google stuff like that before I tour somewhere lol) I still found most of the people i encountered to be super friendly. I don't think you're overreacting tho.
