I agree with Trekker this stems from the patriot act. After 911 the biggest concern has been making sure transactions are not funding terrorist. They also do not want people of money laundering and fraud to easily make transaction.Workers may be inconsistent but ID is required to be shown.

I understand the philosophical & political underpinnings of why the govt. is deathly afraid of financial privacy. I'm looking for practical work-arounds if anyone knows them: there IS NO MORE GREEN DOT RELOAD, which is what I've always used. Now I'm stuck. Writing a paper check & sending it isn't practical for several hundred reasons.

If I need to send cash to someone to whom I cannot drive, what is the most discreet way now to do it? She & I always used green dot before. I've never used Moneygram w/this girl & don't know how to do it online discreetly so I'm protected.

Fold a piece of construction paper around some cash and mail it. The problem with that, though is that there's no way to confirm receipt or recover a loss. Sure, there's registered and certified mail, but unless you live alone, those will compromise privacy, unless you have a trusted bachelor friend who doesn't mind his address being used.

I've never used Green Dot, but I did use a WalMart prepaid Visa a few years ago. The original purchase and funding of the temporary card were anonymous, but I had to register it to get a permanent card and add money. That, along with the $500 cap and the monthly fees made it a bad deal.
