Wireless Internet Options...please help

I recently made a bid on a home in a very rural area. Cable internet isn't an option. Does anyone use either satellite or a wireless modem for their home PC? Pro and cons? I'm clueless. Mainly use the computer for typical home use. Ha, that is assuming typical home use includes downloading porn. But all kidding aside, if anyone can suggest plans you use or have used, I would appreciate any help I can get. For the record, I do have a cell phone tower nearby.

$50.00 a month. You can give them your location and they can tell you about the service. That's for lap top.

I have been thinking about one of those Clear pucks to carry around with my linux laptop as the usb device does not work. How solid is it and what is typical speeds do you see?

to the OP..if latency is not an issue, get satellite but weather can affect it,

If you can get regular DSL usually that is 3 mbit down and about 512kbit up so for general stuff its good.

Spirit- I admit I don't know the terms so I would have a hard time giving you an accurate description of the speed. However it's just as fast as my DSL. Haven't had any issues useing it anywhere around Houston/Harris County at all.

What did you mean as in "solid"? If you mean durability, then I think it's well made but I wouldn't go throwing it on the ground lol.

try this go to www.speedtest.net and test your home speed, then the Clear device..
What I am looking for is something that gives me 3+ megabit down and 1+ megabit up..
not so much for leaching large files or movies but GP stuff.

Solid = signal does not drop out and stall...

I've been using Rover/Clear puck, it works great, ideal for me as I just pay for the days i want it, no subscription, small enough to carrt around when I am visiting on business.

But you need to check out coverage. They have maps showing this.

If he can't get cable net where he osar then dsl is also way out. Dsl is distance limited and subs have to be within 18000 ft of the node. Any furthar and the signal drops off to nothing. His best bet is either wierless net from a cell provider or sat uplink thru dish network.

Not always the case, friend of mine lived in Splendora,Tx..... could not get cable TV or Cable internet, but he got DSL... that distance is from the local switch,..... which he might be close enough for.

You will need an ISP (Internet Service Provider) in order for a wireless router to work.

I have a weekend house on the Trinity River in the middle of nowhere. No cell signals or wireless. To get broadband for the PC I use the Starband satellite (www.starband.net) and get speeds up and down comparable to Comcast here in Houston. It's expensive, but reliable except in very heavy rain........
