This may not be a quick solution, but one of my coworker's wife lost her job a few months ago, and started selling stuff on E-Bay. She goes to garage sales on a daily basis, as well as GoodWill. She is actually making a pretty good living doing so. One person's junk is another persons treasure.

Put a free ad on craigslist. I was just on there looking for someone to do some painting and general stuff that men are best at doing. Fixing a door. Helping me move some things out of storage, etc.
People are really needing someone who is trustworthy to help around the house. Cleaning houses probably isn't something you wish to do but in my 20's and 30's, I did it all of the time and was often making more money than my clients were at the time.
But getting out there on craigslist might be your best option. It's free. If you do not get responses right off the bat, don't be discouraged.
Also, go to a temp agency. They could have you working tomorrow, possibly. It's never a lot of fun the type of work, although one time I did work at a fertility clinic and had to shake up semen in a machine after it was harvested, among other duties. But there are different types of temp agencies .
www.imprimis.com
This is a good place to start and it's very high end. But they might not have the type of work that you're looking for. But it's a good start and they will guide you in a different direction if need be. I was actually offered full time employment through this company but declined the position. They have a lot to offer people.
Good luck!!!
Elisabeth
P.S. If you have the ability, and it's pretty friendly to use, create a wordpress blog and advertise what you can do and offer. Then, place in tags the things that you're offering. "handy man" "consulting engineer and specialties" things like that so Google and other search engines will pick up on it. Many of the newer and more advance websites are going to a wordpress blog because it's very easy to augment and add to. Again, good luck!

Elizabeth, it's funny how some employers don't recognize their own employees skills. They had you shaking up samples? Too bad they didn't have you assist with collecting samples.

LOL. I loved working temp jobs and this one was at a really nice fertility clinic. I used to laugh a lot. But it was serious business for the couples coming in.
They gave men a dirty magazine and they went into a room. The nurse would give me the sample. But even in my 20's, I had some of "this" in my blood and would have loved to have done that!!!
I NEVER liked regular jobs and always found myself doing different jobs that garnered a lot of money or at least, money that would be quickly in hand. So I did a lot of waitressing, bartending, temp jobs and grunt work ... i.e. painting, housecleaning, did garage sales for others for several years. Stuff like that.
And it's an excellent way to make a living between opportunities. The original poster was bold to ask here. Although he's gotten some crap for it, hopefully, these suggestions will help him get over the hump.
We've all been there!

Another idea along the lines of the garage sale... Sell some shit on EBAY.
I have used EBAY to sell old toys that people buy for a lot. I had some transformers from when I was a kid. My mom was moving and came across them and she told me I had take them when she was cleaning out her house or she was going to get rid of them. I sold 10 of them for $100-$350 each.
I sell golf clubs and other things at much higher than I would expect prices.

Darn, Snow, being a little cold hearted.
The guy just might be in need. Of course, asking a bunch of Fu-ktards on a web site dedicated to the endless pursuit of screwing might be scraping the bottom of the employment barrel.
And, what if it was a scam, and he was trying to raise the "one large" to come and see you
