John hits a home run with that little sentence.
The problem is that now days, people are only concerned about their rights, if they trod on someone else's rights, that's just too bad.
I always remember a teacher who summed it up best: "Your right to swing your arm ends where my nose begins."

I thought this was an interesting thing to look up. I was curious how much 'sin-tax' the govt sucks from us every year. The information wasn't as easy to find as I thought it would be but here is some stuff I found:
http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/taxfa....cfm?Docid=399
http://www.americanrifleman.org/Blog...id=1766&cid=25
In 2008, the government collected 5.7 billion in alcohol taxes.
In 2009, the government collection 110 million in firearm & ammunition taxes in the first quarter, so that comes out to roughtly 440 million for the year (I couldn't find the exact number, maybe someone else has better links?).

Rational me LOL, what would be interesting and I am not a math major so its not something I could do but If you could figure it in precentage vs. number of units sold, I think you would find the percentage of tax is a lot higher on weapons, but sin tax is all around us. Its the favorite method of choice used by the left to try and mold us into behaving the way they think we should.

I thought it was a good point to but dammit it pains me to admit it Our society has become self serving and inconsiderate, which is what I think brownback was talking about because people were kinder and more hospitable back in the 50's.

I'm a big supporter of the 2nd Amendment. The founders of our country wanted an armed populace if for no other reason than to keep the power of the government in check.
What I have a problem with is the carry concealed laws, and how liberal they have become. Arizona has the most liberal carry concealed laws in the country. Very little needed to walk around armed with the weapon CONCEALED.
I'm somewhat uncomfortable with a lot of people carrying, but the CONCEALED part is what really bothers me. Arizona law is so lacking that it has to have some affect on the willingness of its population to feel entitled to walk around secretly armed to the teeth.
Allow people to carry but require it to be done openly. Let us see what he's carrying as he walks into the rally, and let him see what other are carrying as he's trying to decide whether to start a firefight.

The left. really? I think you would argue it both ways. Tax on booze - the left? Kansas, a conservative Republician state, yet with some of the worst liquor laws. I don't see the "bearded elitist" telling me what to do, but the "bible thumping" conservative block telling me not to drink, gamble or chase women." Cigarettes - everybody is on that damn bandwagon.
Sin tax is simply an easy tax to pass, most people are not going to object, or most politicians won't. Who is going to stand up in the chamber and argue against a tax on cigarettes or gambling? The would be blasted about it in the next election.
The only tax that is easier to pass is the "tourist tax" Come to visit and you find an extra tax on your rental car and hotel room. The populace doesn't care as it does not come (directly) out of their pocket.

You have the right to own a gun, no arguement with that. If you are irresponsible with your gun, as above, you need to be charged with a crime.
It is like free speech, you can't yell "Fire" in a crowded theater, when there is no fire.

This thread is about guns. Not illegal drugs (not a topic for this board) alcohol or prescription drugs.
Thanks!

Just remember, if you outlaw guns; only outlaws will have guns. Just something to think about. Look at Sweden. Everyone is required to serve and keep their weapon. If there is an attack, the NATION is trained and armed. To me, gun control means hitting your target.

I like this explanation:
"If guns cause crime, then cars cause drunk driving fatalities, spoons and forks cause obesity, and pencils cause misspelled words."

I used to have guns. Used to have several really nice ones. Gave them up (sold) so a woman would feel comfortable moving in and living with me and her kid. Now the woman is gone, the kid lives with his real Dad and I wish I had my f***in guns back!
So soon we are old and so late we are smart!

Yeah, I knew as soon as this happened there would be a clamor for gun control. And it's tragic that it would happen. But it's worth noting that there are relatively few instances of legally purchased guns being used in crimes of violence. Someone, I think MuffRider, mentioned concealed carry. People with CC permits are usually even safer. They have further background checks, training and are subject to MUCH stiffer penalties if they carry into unauthorized areas. Most of the training consists of making sure you know all the places you CAN'T carry like schools, churches, hospitals, government buildings, political rallies and bars. Restaurants you can (unless they have a sign posted). But what if they serve alcohol. Is it a bar or a restaurant? That'd be up to the DA to decide after you're arrested.
Anyway, I've always wondered why guns are such a hot topic. I mean we live in a country where EVERY 16 y.o. (14 or 15 in many states) only have to read a small booklet and not kill the grader on the 5 minute driving test and you get a license for life unless you REALLY mess up. More people are killed by legally-owned cars than legally-owned guns. But there's no cry to make it more difficult or expensive to own cars. If you get stopped without a license on expired tags you will detained briefly, pay some fines and be back driving in no time. Get caught carrying without a permit with an illegally registered gun and you're going to prison.
Look, there will always be violence. Taking guns won't stop lunatics from getting them. If you could magically make all the guns in the world disappear today they'd still use rocks, knives or whatever else they can get their hands on. Violence has been around since Cain slew Able and isn't going any where soon. We need to do what we can to keep ILLEGAL guns out of the hands of thugs, gang members and dangerous felons. BTW it's illegal for them to own guns already, but I'm pretty sure most gang bangers are packing. 15 yo gang bangers are packing. The "law" didn't exactly stop them from getting it.
Someone asked a very telling question earlier in asking what might have been if someone could have shot the nutjob before he got to his 2nd victim. To me THAT is the question. And I'd be willing to bet the answer is because it's illegal to carry a gun to a political event. So those law-abiding citizens who had legal carry permits were not allowed to bring them for fear of going to prison. But that's an argument I bet you won't hear on CNN...
