Default "random" question on sign-up

On signing up, I was posed this "random" question:

Quote:
If you had 9 pairs of shoes and you gave three of them away, how many would you have left?

The correct answer is: 15 shoes (or 7.5 pairs of shoes).

However, the system sees those answers as incorrect. After a couple of failed attempts (and getting the same "random" question each retry), I realized the answer it was looking for, although incorrect, was "6". That's just silly.

I don't remember if I got a question like that at sign-up but I imagine those questions are there to weed out the robots

It said 9 pairs of shoes....

the them referred to a full pair of shoes....

You might be very wrong.

You cant cut a shoe into a decimal point or fration unless thet are sandles. lol

Any english majors wanna weigh in.

You are correct; the antecedent of "them" is "pairs". "Shoes" is merely the object of the preposition "of", modifying "pairs".

Huck
Actually, that came from my undergraduate degree, which was in English.
