Exactly. Beck – and Palin – personify for me what's wrong with political media today. Uneducated, self-aggrandizing, and bigotted fruitcakes like these two are able to exploit the unhappiness that the general population is feeling towards government by telling the people what they want to hear. But there's nothing behind it. There's no understanding of the real issues... no comprehension or articulation of a better alternative. Just two bottom-feeders looking to prop themselves up on their missions of personal glory and celebrity, irregardless of the negative impacts it may have. Normally none of it would matter because these two (for example) don't represent anything but themselves. However, at a time when so many people are unhappy with government and so many serious problems need to be addressed, it can create problems.

Me too. Years ago I would have said Republican, but no way do I endorse or want to be associated with the current crop of Republicans. The American Taliban. On the other hand, nor do I want anything to do with Pelosi and her band of incompetent crooks. I guess you could say I'm 'disenfranchised'.

Beck is the problem? How can Beck personify what is wrong with a political system? How can any entertainer regardless of how they garner ratings be bad for a POLITICAL SYSTEM?
Because he gets ratings he is wrong? What about Keith Olbermann? Put the biscuit in the basket turned political hate commentator? I have really tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but right or wrong he is so hateful. Is he also what is wrong with the politcal system?
There are many things wrong with our political system but entertainers are not one of them. The people who put so much effort into both believing and hating them are more of a problem than the entertainers themselves.

Poor choice of words on my part. Meant to say political media (corrected). Too much coverage is given to 'entertainers' like Beck who don't know shit (but know what the people want to hear) because they say and do crazy things that attract audiences and advertising. This comes at the expense of quality coverage of the real issues. I don't think the lazy/naive masses look upon Beck as an entertainer the same way that you do. I fear that many people are naive enough to think that Beck knows what he's talking about and are forming opinions based on that nonsense.

I think there is ample quality coverage. It is just boring and no one wants to watch it. CSPAN does a pretty good job of showing unedited commentary straight from the horse's mouth.
The real problem is people NOT taking the time to educate themselves AND the people who think the entertainers are the problem. Look how much time and effort has been put into this thread alone and all those items TTH posted. This is EXACTLY what people like Beck would want. Exposure, coverage, regardless of whether or not you agree with any or all of what he says. My wife is more interested in what the Kardashians are doing than what is being debated in congress (I admit I am interested in Kim's ass but I digress). I don't hate the Kardashians though because they can get coverage and ratings. The rage against Beck and these other entertainers and pundits is absolutely amazing. I don't hate Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS, Mediamatters, etc. just because I don't agree with their tactics.
I think that is alot of LK's point. Why the hate? Why the rage?

Okay . . . I can't resist
1. Regan was an "entertainer" -- Let's don't go there.
2. I'll say it in a clear voice: Glen Beck (A Mormon) cloaking himself in "Christian Values" tells me all I need to know.
And, everyone, please be nice to Sarah. She's my favorite PILF!
Easy with the name calling -- you'll label me wrong, anyway.

Facts are a bear, aren't they?
Born in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan moved to Los Angeles, California in 1937. He began a career as an actor, first in films and later television, appearing in over fifty movie productions and gaining enough success to become a famous man. Some of his most notable roles are in Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row. Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later spokesman for General Electric (GE)
Come on . . . deal with facts and history. They won't kill you!

And my joke flew right over your head dude. Amazing how so many have zero knowledge of history yet are so quick to point out facts.
Without looking it up in Google who was REGAN? After all, thats the name you spelled.

Playing the Fun with Fox News Game
Sorry . . . couldn't resist tossing the bait out there.
And, yeah, Don was probably one of the brighter financial minds we've had in politics (which was why he was so "entertaining"!)

Boltfan - don't confuse 'knowledge of history' with ability to spell. If spelling were a requirement here, this place would be about as popular as MySpace.

Yes, there is lots of coverage, but I would hardly call CSPAN mainstream. The masses only seem to know three networks: (MS)NBC, CNN and FOX. The rest of the networks are just noise and soap operas and reality shows.
I passionately agree that the real problem is people not taking the time to educate themselves. They absorb the rhetoric from their favorite sources without any intellectual parsing and that's how we end up with large chunks of the population up in arms over non-issues or the wrong issues.
Why the anger over the Sarah Palins and Glenn Becks? Because they're stirring the pot with bullshit that they're not qualified to talk to, they're getting lots of coverage, and as a result large segments of the naive population have misguided opinions and focus on the wrong issues. These dumb fucks are being given a respect and credibility that they don't deserve. Just my opinion, of course.

L4L,
You claim Beck is not qualified.
Nor Palin.
Beck has an entire staff filled with people who scour news media of all kinds.
Is that any different from a CEO who has a dozen VPs who simply send reports to the person and the CEO signs a few papers and attends meetings and is a public person for the company?
Since you feel Beck (and his entire staff) are not qualified, who do you feel in the news reporting world IS qualified?
Give me 5 names of who you feel is qualified.
And then, just what about Beck makes him unqualified given he has an entire staff doing research for him all day.
