Default Working on getting the quit...

So, I decided a little while ago to quit smoking for good. I don't smoke all the time, I'm more of a social smoker. After the event or party is over, I remember how I hate it and its time to stop. I promised myself that I would be a full fledged non-smoker by this weekend, and so I'm not socializing as much to get ready for this...b/c that's when I do it the most.

Do you guys and dolls have suggestions for success?

Addiction is a tough thing to overcome. Does not matter how often the user uses the substance, just that the user utilizes it when the urge appears and it becomes destructive in that person's life.

Sounds like you got the first part down pat. And that is deciding to stop, now comes the tough part. Actually stopping. In my job I deal with addicts, alcoholics, sexually devious people. They have shared with me over the years their patterns for success in quitting any substance or habit. Unfortunately that formula appears to be different for each individual so there is no one answer that fits all. That is my experience anyway.

I have been told on numerous occassions do not quit smoking forever. Just quit at this moment. Example: You are socializing and even drinking and your playmates are smoking away at the bar or event. Make the decision that no matter what happens you will not smoke that evening. And I have a freind that had to stop drinking for about 6 months in order for him to quit smoking completely. The only time he smoked is when he drank. After he had it down pat he started drinking again without the urge to smoke. After several times of socializing without smoking the urge to smoke diminishes and eventually through time the urge goes away. Just a suggestion. Also, maybe ask your group not to give you a cigarette no matter what, get their help involved, if they are friends, they will comply and help keep you from smoking that night. Just another suggestion.

I never had the habit of smoking so I cannot tell you first hand, my vice is hobbying and putting women's body parts next to my mouth instead of cigarettes, helps give me that oral fixation I urge, lol, and I have no plans on quitting that any time soon.

First... you have to know that it can be done!!

I have a work buddy who was planning to take a trans-atlantic flight to go visit his son in the military, in Italy. He was, without any doubt the smoking-est MF'r I've ever seen in my life!! He always had the next cigarette in his fingers... playing with it, as he was smoking the now cigarette!! He was a 3 pack / day kinda guy!!

He got the quit-patches and started taking them a few days before the trip. Can't remember if he had quit during those few days or not.....but he made it across the atlantic without smoking.... so he figured he would see how long he could go beyond that. On the second day of his trip.... his rental car was broken into, and he had his patches stolen!

The irony of the situation must have been a trip....but he vowed to take it as a sign..... and hasn't smoked a single cigarette since then. That was over TEN YEARS AGO !! IT CAN BE DONE !!

He's still a nervous, fidgity type of guy.... he gives toothpicks and straws HELL !! But he dropped cigarettes for good.... all in one shot!! IT CAN BE DONE..... if ya want to bad enough!!

Best Wishes , Good Luck ,

Giz

I am hooked on the gum and have been for over seven years. Have not had one to smoke since I quit, now just have to get away from this damn gum. Several friends have gone the Rx route and say it is very easy. Talk with your Doctor. I have the Rx just haven't gotten it filled and know I need to. What can I say, I need my oral fix.

Well, it may not be appropriate in certain social settings, but I have something you put in your mouth instead.

Sorry, just couldn't resist it.

Never been a smoker, but I drink when I socialize. I just socialize a lot!

My dad and 2 brothers used to smoke. They all quit and did it cold turkey. I think it's the only way to do it. It's a willpower thing when it comes to "social smoking" and not so much an addiction. More of a bad habit. While difficult to do, just say "NO!" Easier to say than do, but it's the only way.

After a Heart Attack,My Doctor was always on me to quit.He once asked me if I'd like to try the patch.I asked him if they worked and he said"if you want them to."

So,I guess you really need the will to stop.I still smoke.I did quit drinking over night after that though.Still can't figure that out and it was 23 years ago.

Nina as others have said it can be done. The 1st time I quit was cold turkey my 1st wife told me quit or move out (that what happens when you are with a respitory therapist) and for 12 yrs I didnt smoke then got smart and divorced and socializing dragged me back. The 2nd time I went the Rx way and that has worked now for 2 yrs. If you go that route watch out for the truly bizarre dreams that the Rx gives. Best of luck and think about substituting something other then cigs for that oral fixation.

Watch out porno if she uses your substitute but then tries to light it. I can see a disaster in the making

After your done, never pull the "I can just do one again" routine. Quit for 8 months, had to drive a long trip and hadn't much sleep, so I figured I would get a cig to keep alert. One turned into one more, etc till smoking frequently again. It is relatively easy to not smoke that first one after a long time quitting. It is all but impossible to not smoke that second one after quitting for a long time.

Even one can bring back the smoking associations with all the routines that used to be associated with smoking. Breaking the routines (in your case socially) is often harder than any actual nicotine addiction.

I smoked in high school. I thought it was sexy and sophisticated, because of my fascination with old movies. I just quit one day, because I didn't really like the way my hair and clothes smelled all the time. I still like the taste of cigarettes on another man's lips, but I really prefer to date people who don't smoke at all. I have a penchant for those bad boys.

LOL, you guys are silly! But thank you 1000 thank yous for the good advice!

Jaquie: I agree. The smell is icky. I never smoke before a date. Once I shower, I'm done. When I go somewhere or meet someone, and I smell it on someone walking by...ugh. Its so gross. I hate to think that I smell like that too! I wash my hands after every cigarette (not really that big of a deal b/c I don't smoke that much) and I spray body spray on myself too. Its like a ritual to keep the gross smell away, but I know its not enough. I didn't even know I was addicted until I went somewhere for a few days and couldn't smoke while I was there. I thought I was gonna go mad!

Daarakan: I totally agree. Once you stop, you gotta stop. There can be no "I'll just have this ONE."

I'm going to try regular gum, and have enrolled in a quit program nearby. I'm excited to get going on it! And if I don't have gum, I'm sure I can always fine a willing gentleman to help satiate my oral fixation!
