As I said before... "I thought" which means it was in my opinion that picking Palin was a very very bad move for McCain. Polls are redundant if you lost the election. I think he would have been more successful if he had a more legitimate running mate that was just knowledgeable about our government, the economy and foreign affairs as McCain himself. Not hastly picking a female as your running mate because your campaign need something to up the ante and get people excited about your campaign. There were so many people that could have made a better running mate, people just took her as a joke.

Mitt ( or his campaign managers) did a wonderful job picking a running mate, the press is having a field day and trying so had to dig up dirt on Ryan to make him look bad. But everyone knows Ryan is a serious politician and even though people may not agree with his beliefs they still respect how he staunchly defends his beliefs.There is really no joking around with Ryan. That's what McCain needed a strong figure as running to help cement his image of a no thrills bi partisan future leader that would do what he needed to do to make the country better not do what the country wants or to tell them what they want to hear just to appease the masses.

McCain looked like the fool suspending his campaign; remember the footage of McCain sitting at the table with Obama and others.....McCain had nothing of substance to offer....Obama steamrolled his win from that point forward.

Palin saved McCain from a worse electoral blow out.

I heard the same thing said about voting for GW being a "compassionate conservative," without knowing what a "compassionate conservative" was.

We didn't find out what a "compassionate conservative" really was until September 15, 2008.

Well, I think we had a pretty good clue when G W. Bush, along with congressional Republicans, created an expensive (and unpaid-for) prescription drug entitlement expansion in 2003.

Even as a prelude to that, the Republican congress jettisoned PAYGO "rules" in 2002 so that they could push through tax cuts and spending increases simultaneously.

The Iraq War exacerbated our fiscal problems, but they would have been bad enough without it.

The only reason that the headline deficit numbers weren't far worse in the mid-'00s was that our economic weaknesses were masked by an unsustainable debt-fueled consumption boom.

I agree that Ryan is an excellent choice. He seems to know the budget stuff backwards and forwards. Palin was a lightweight for sure, but she did seem to energize McCain's campaign, and the base loved her.

We'll never know if choosing a more substantial running mate, like for instance Romney, would have made a difference. My guess is, with the disadvantage in campaign funding and the collapsing economy, blamed on Bush, McCain was doomed.
