Default Bumping review threads

A recent thread/post has me thinking.

#13 - In our review forums, be mindful of the 'maturity' of threads you are posting to, ie. the date of the last item posted. We ask that you refrain from posting to a review in which the last post was made 30 or more days ago. Some exceptions may apply if you are providing relevant, valuable or updated information about the provider, but as a general rule of thumb, this can best be accomplished by writing a new review altogether and avoiding the bumping of old ones. This applies to our review forums, in particular, as discussion threads are often allowed to flow for an unspecified length of time.
I have always figured that the only person who was technically breaking the rule of bumping an old review thread was the original bumper. I also thought any subsequent "bumpers" we not actually bumping it because the clock has started over since someone else took the heat for bumping it. To be honest, if this it not the case, I have been guilty of it on many occasions just because I usually don't look back and notice it was illegally bumped in the first place.

Some clarification please.

GP,

You are right. The original bumper is the guilty party and he OR she should be, and generally is, the one who receives a friendly warning PM, a Warning PM, a WARNING, or is sanctioned!

If bumping is such a bad thing, why not just close the thread after the time limit passes.

I probably did not phrase my post properly.

I did not mean to imply that I would have sanctioned you guys or anything. No way.

What I meant was more along the lines of this:

Normally, I would have made a post in the thread itself as soon as it was bumped, and I would have publicly warned the person who did it. And also asked that no one else pile on.

But in THIS case..... since the girl herself was clueless enough to bump a thread about her that was so negative.... I let it ride for a few days. Let you guys make your points. Then shut it off.

It might have been kinda cheap and underhanded, but she asked for it, IMHO.

So generally, yes... once someone "re-opens" the thread, others can post without fear of reprisal. BUT, like almost everything else, this is a judgment call. If someone bumps a thread for shitty reasons - like to harass or insult someone - and then YOU pile on and do the same..... you could all get dinged.

Bottom line is this: don't bump a thread unless there is something VERY relevant to add to it. The same with commenting after others have bumped it. It is much better to start another thread in the appropriate forum (usually not the Review section).

Tiger's question about whether it is better to "Close" a bumped thread is a good one. In many other areas of ECCIE, that is standard procedure. And, the "bumper" gets an automatic infraction. We generally don't do that here. But I have done it in a couple of cases where it is obvious that nothing useful can be added or where things have degenerated into a personal attack.

Like I said, avoid bumping in almost every instance. Start another thread or send a PM to the person you think might have the info you need.

Actually...change the rule. Why not allow a thread to be bumped if information is relevant. On every other board i have ever been on it doesnt matter how old the thread is. It can be bumped. I dont get what the big deal is.

Yeah, and some of those other boards are a real mess. They have a ton of good info, and it can be interesting to see how things "change" over time, but some of those threads go on for thousands of posts. Crazy.

But read the rule in full. You will see that it specifically DOES say that you can post if it is relevant.

But then we have to discuss what "relevant" means. And unfortunately, it is a judgment call, like every other dang thing on here. Have you guys ever really noticed what is posted when reviews are bumped? It is usually some request for basic info or something like that from a newbie or someone who does not know how to "Search" what they need.

So I think you should almost NEVER bump an old review. Why? First, because the rule as it stands keeps current reviews near the top, where they should be. Second, because there are so many OTHER ways to make your point or get the info you need. You can post and/or ask about a provider in a new thread in something like the "Requests and In Search Of" forum, the "Men's Lounge,".... whereever. I know it may not be very elegant or efficient, but I think that is preferable to a bunch of old review threads that go on for dozens of pages.

Whatsamatter, HD? Too many commas make it hard for you to follow? He's got it right. It may not be pretty, but it is the right answer.
