Best and most eloquent articulation I've seen of why this CFA debacle is not about free speech and why it's important.

http://www.owldolatrous.com/?p=288

It's too bad the people supporting CFA don't understand that they are the modern equivalent of the pointy-hats with burning crosses. History tells us that in 100% of past examples of ignorance and discrimination, enlightenment and intelligence always prevails in this country (eventually). Always. Racial slavery is over. Women can vote. Inter-racial marriage is legal and common. Women lead corporations and serve in the military. Within the next decade, same-sex marriage will be legal and common. It's inevitable.

The more visibility this issue gets, the sooner it will be overcome. That's the cool part. The more vocal the Ignoratia are, the more wrath and demand for change it will draw from the tolerant masses.

Love to hear your thoughts on the subject, but please DON'T comment if you haven't read all of the post that is linked. It isn't very long. That would be like reviewing a book you haven't read.

Cheers,

L4L

I am in agreement with you and the person who wrote the post in that link 100%.
The problem, as my less informed than I should be self sees it,* is that most Christians don't believe they are fighting against what homosexuals ARE, but what they CHOOSE to be.
As long as there is a debate about whether homosexuality is a choice or not, there will continue to be this same hatred and intolerance directed towards homosexuals.

*At least I hope that is the fundamental problem. The thought of good "Christians" hating people for just BEING different is reprehensible to me.

Good points, and interesting topic.

I'm not religious myself but concur with scooter... I don't think they see this as hatred.

As a raging libertarian, I don't want ANYONE, church, state or you, telling me who I should be, what I should think, or how I should live my life. My obligation is to return the favor, aye?

I may not agree with a word coming out of Dan Cathy's mouth on this topic, but am horrified when government officials use the power of their office to punish individuals simply because of their beliefs.

I saw Barney Frank comment on this... maybe the first time in my life I've ever agreed with him on anything.

My issue is also with the publicly elected figures making statements in their official capacity to say that a private entities views subject them to harmful repercussions from the government. Unless they wish to cite that the company is in violation of any state of federal laws they need to keep their fucking mouths shut.

Besides, all marriage should be private. Government should not be in the business of endorsing any marriage whatsoever.

I'm a Christian and MOST Christians get on m fuckng nerves. You'd think the followers of a gu as free as Jesus was would be more laid back.

Are the Westboro Baptist members "good Christians?"

Default NeverEnding Debate

....similar to Abortion issue in that it will ALWAYS be a hot button issue...
Evangelicals believe that Sexuality is a choice, and that is what sets it apart from other discrimination issues....Obviously the Homosexual supporters believe that they are born that way....neither side is going to budge on their position...
Couple of points by the author of the article, though: When he points out that over 70 other countries could possibly punish homosexuality by death...Umm, when did we start caring about foreign laws? There is enough debate over our country getting involved in foreign countries/dictators actually Killing people that some Americans are fed up with...Do we really want to start trying change other social policies too? Secondly, The article writer talks about "christians" wearing WWJD bracelets and mis-behaving, etc...and churches "looking the other way"...
There will ALWAYS be members of any group you can imagine who "break the rules" or are hypocritical to the beliefs they "supposedly" adhere to...to attack those people seems not much different from some of the attacks that other groups unjustly receive...Personally, I am horrified by about 99% of supposed "religious" pastors (or whatever you want to call them) that are on TV, and I wholeheartedly believe that they will each pay a very dear price when they eventually meet their maker, for the injustices they have and are doing....Personally, I dont have an issue with the Gay/Lesbian community, except when they mobilize and exude the same Hate that they themselves hate when it is aimed at them....I understand that SOME of the activities that the foundations that Chic Fil A support are anti-homosexual, but if you think they are the ONLY high profile company that engages in this type of support, you are sorely mis-informed. I agree with the sentiment that it is a VERY dangerous slope to allow certain Government Entities (such as city of Chicago, San Francisco) to come out and declare that they will do what they can to dis-allow building permits to Chic Fil A for comments/policies of there upper management...once again, isnt this the type of discrimination that EVERY color, race, heritage, ethnicity and sexual orientation should ADAMENTLY BE OPPOSE TO?
Bottom line is this, if you dont like where a company is spending their profits, dont contribute to them.

Man, I didnt intend for this to go on like this....apologies for that

Good comments. I agree that there is no need for any level of government involvement in any of this. As far as I know, CFA is not breaking any employment laws.

I do hope that you will all consider boycotting CFA so that none of our $ goes to Dan Cathy's contributions to organizations that promote intolerance.

Cheers,

Sorry, I like the occasional Spicy Chicken Biscuit for breakfast. And since they are not breaking any laws I am cool with Eat More Chikin

Not breaking the law <> not being bigoted assholes.

And while I do crave the waffle fry, choosing where to spend my $ goes beyond "is the business run legally?" There are a lot of shitty, but legal, practices I choose not to support simply by not giving them sales.

Continues to be an interesting topic!

I definitely sympathize with the gay community on this and look forward to the day when basic civil liberties extend to them too. But I disagree with the OP when he says this is not about freedom of speech. As soon as the mayors of multiple cities announced that Chik fila wouldn't be welcome in their towns, it became all about freedom of speech for me.

I do agree with the OP that gays will inevitably have their rights... maybe not soon enough, but soon. The only question is, "how do we go about it"?

Me, Big Brother frightens me a lot more than brother Falwell does...

Like Falwell (even though he's dead), Roberston and the others who "know best," don't aspire to be The Really Big Brother. It is, after all, for our own good.

Sir do you even know what this is about. Dan Cathy made a statement that he supports one man and one women only marriages and believes in what the bible says man shall not lay with another man and he contributes money to support that belief.

Now it is the same sex marriage people that JUMPED on this ban wagon and has there underwear in a bunch. In my opinion these people are the one's that blew this out of proportion and is keeping it alive. Everybody has a right to they opinion you do and I do, personal I DON'T believe in same sex marriage but others do just don't tell me I'm wrong for not believing in it.

Home depot has came out in support of same sex marriage but I did not and don't think anybody else protested and had a rally to boycott them for supporting it, that is there opinion.

It seems to me it is the gays that are pushing there beliefs down everybody's throat, and saying if you don't believe then your a hater that's BULLSHIT. If you believe in same sex marriage that's fine but if you don't then that should be fine also but in today's environment if you don't believe then your labeled a gay hater.

In my opinion if it don't hurt anybody else then do what you think is right just don't push your beliefs down my throat and don't get mad at who or what organization I donate my money to and I will give you the same courtesy this should apply to the whole USA.
