Deaf hobbyists?

Anyone else our there trying to hobby while deaf? My story
in shoet-several years ago I was a casual hobbyist.
I was never into it on a large scale. Got married, left
the scene then about 4 years ago I lost my hearing. I've
wanted to get back in the game but the deafness
makes it difficult. I can still speak fine, just can't hear.
Tried a couple of AMPs, one pretty successfully, the second
not so much. Just curious if there are others out there
like me who have some experiences.

There was an absolutely fantastic deaf provider in Fort Worth a few years ago ( Viviane for those who may remember ). Too bad she's left the scene.

With email and a phone that texts, you should be able to locate a good independent provider that will work with you and your situation.

DG, As long as your cash is green, I think you will find little in the way of obstacles for you. Explaining in an email upfront should prepare a gal. In fact, there are a few you could stomach visiting that I cannot because they talk incessantly about nothing.

Most quality providers will be able to accommodate all manner of disabilities during a visit. You're gonna have to do a little more legwork up front but with PMs, emails, IMs...shouldn't be too tough.

I'm getting a bit hard of hearing as I get older. And it is interesting how many providers have trouble dealing with such a common side effect of aging. My hearing is fine is the environment is quiet. But if there's background music, or sheets are being rustled in my ear, I can hear that something's being said, but I can't make out what it is. Same thing if I have my good ear down on a pillow. You would think that providers would see a wide enough swath of people over 50 that they would be accustomed to this, but apparently not. And according to my ENT, my hearing is not to the point that I need a hearing aid. It must be hell for those who are really hard of hearing.

And this is a shame. Though it is unusual to meet a hobbyist with this issue on a regular basis, all it takes is compassion and communication to overcome this problem.

For the deaf, if you can lip read let her know that, otherwise written communication would be called for on her part. If just hard of hearing, as in the case above, she shouldn't have a problem making sure that the environment where is session is taking place is void of any needless noise. If any provider is so base where she cannot accomodate you, there are plenty who will.

I have worked with the hearing impaired through another occupation, and my SO is deaf in one ear himself...I am used to being asked to repeat myself, and I know a small bit of sign language.
Basic understanding of the situation and a little give is all it takes for a good time.

My main curiosity is the communication prior to the session.
From just reading reviews etc a lot of providers are phone
driven. They give you a general area, you call when you get
close then they give the exact location. Years ago I saw a
provider who had that set up. Go to this convenience
store and call her. Then she gave the actual spot.
What it was is her apartment window had a view of
the phone booth. I suppose that was so she could
get a look at the customer. Would a provider give
explicit location details via email privat message? I
can understand why they might not want to.
Obviously after the first time it wouldn't be an issue
because they would then "know" you etc.

The two call system is pretty common, IMHO. However, these days a lot of providers text also. Let her know by email or PM ahead of time that you'll have to do it by text, and most ladies will be able to do so. The alternative is to do an outcall. That way, you can have accessible things like pen and paper all set up. The down side to an outcall is that most provider charge more.

But the texting should work. Most providers won't take the initial contact by text, but when you explain via email, they probably won't have a problem.

I actually prefer email and text over phone calls myself, and I give out my addy via email...
I have noticed on some outcalls, I end up with the two call system from the gentlemen...and sometimes they are in a hotel anyways...but if that's what makes them feel more comfortable, it's fine.
Like what charles said, if you just explain yourself via email, there really shouldn't be any problems...and if a provider can't seem to understand, it is her loss!

who has an impairment of any sort. while it must hamper ones communications and enjoyment of this hobby it must be so much better than in the days before email, texts pm and other electronic message methods. i can only imagine the difficulty and frustration of trying to meet someone simply using the telephone.
