I had an problem with these little fuckers in my last place, and the exterminators have a difficult time killing these little bastards. I've never been bitten (knock wood) but a bite from one is most likely what killed my cat and possibly a small caged animal my son was keeping, according to the vet.

I don't know if the winter would have a great deal to do with it, but I can see where it might - but they are typically most active mating and laying eggs in May through August in our area, and a recluse spider in the outdoors that may have died due to cold weather would still be one that would most likely die anyway given the life-cycle of the spider, as juvenile spiders can survive some pretty cold temperatures where older ones cannot, and they are a species entrenched in man-made structures. All of the exterminators I called (and I tried three) told me that in most areas of Kansas City (with very few exceptions), if you are in a wood framed house or similar sized structure (given the KC area average 2000 sq. foot home), they can safely estimate that if the structure is untreated and more than a year old, that there are 75-100 of them right there along with you. It's fraking scary, they are everywhere (you might live your entire life in the home and never see one, but they are there), and they are harder than an ex-wife to kill (something I grew up hearing occasionally, while my father was being bled for alimony). When they told me there might be as many as 500 in my last place (40 year old wood framed home), I looked for new construction and had it pretreated before I moved in.

Studies are showing that if you stay up to date on yout DTaP you are less likely to develop the full potential effect of the bite. Some people are bitten and have no adverse effects at all.

But this isn't something to fool around with, if bitten, seek medical treatement.

You're still talking about spiders right? Not cats?

Agreeded!

This is not a joke. The bite site can cause a lot of pain. Look out for the little things. By the way a lot of house treatments are not effective. The spider traps that are placed along the baseboard, and in closets seem to be the most help. I have bought the traps by the case for one of my buildings. We have caught a few and gained more in peace of mind. The one thing about the "Recluse" is that recluse is exactly what it is: it hides. It can also eat dead insects; so when you treat for insects in the house you just provide a new source of food for the little guys.

Tea tree oil full strength works wonders. You can put it in a diffuser and also rub it on wood floors along the baseboard. Rub a few drops on ankles and around wrists before bed.

Cheap glue traps this time of year will catch a few ...

They are the worst. Being bitten in your sleep like Kaylen was would be a total nightmare. Imagine being bitten on the perineum. Or the glans of your penis. After it heals it would look like a bratwurst with a big bite taken out of the end.

Had a bite on the inside of my wrist one time. The sore won't heal for a couple of weeks and I'm a picker. I got tired one day, pulled out my work knife and went to work. I opened the wound and the bottom looked funny. Smooth, odd colored, not like flesh. I pinched it and pulled out a little pod the size of a soy bean. The hole started to bleed like any normal wound. It healed after that but left a scar for a few years.

Default Spider

I was bitten on my knee while I was sleeping.
An hour after I woke up I had a very painful leg cramp and then I couldn't bend my leg. I went to my dr immediately. I was lucky, it cleared up nicely since I did not squeeze the "pimple". If you are bitten or wake up with what appears to be a zit in a strange place do not squeeze it, you could release the poison into your body by squeezing.

What you pulled out was actually the venom sack. The BR will bite you and deposit a venom sack. Sometimes it breaks immediately and sometimes it can stay there for days and weeks before it breaks open.
