I'd like to add two more, tenors from the 70s:

Journey: Steve Perry, and Kansas: Steve Walsh. Of the two, Steve Walsh had probably the most vocal range and power of ANY mainstream Tenor in the rock area EVER. It's too bad his voice has not held up over the years.

Damn, ya'll bringing up names I had not considered. Grace Slick and Micky Cantor was close to being the same. I thought of Joe Perry but talked myself out of it, and does does merit mention.

A list of greats without doubt but how about someone that no one has mentioned.
Susan Boyle.

Tough choices, so many different styles...

For women the criteria is who has a powerful articulate voice who needs no backup or electronic enhancement;
Debra Harry
Pat Benator
Patty LaBelle
Patsy Cline
Ofra Haza

For men:
Freddie Mercury
Elvis Presley
Sam Cooke
Roy Orbison
Barry White

Shooter, I was just about to mention Susan Boyle LOL

My list:

Females:

Sarah Brightman, and her sister Amelia runs a close second
Eva Cassidy
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Adele
Amy Winehouse
Susan Boyle - not quite sure she belongs among the 'greats' just yet, but she does have enormous potential and natural talent
Yma Sumac - she had a 5 octave vocal range. Truly astounding

Males:

Michael Buble
Josh Groban
Ray LaMontagne
Billy Joel
Dan Fogelberg
Christopher Cross
Meatloaf
Teddy Pendergross
Luther Vandross
Michael Crawford
Colm Wilkinson

Linda Rondstadt is my ATF singing voice. I am glad to see another one mentioned her. Alison Kraus is right up there too!

The problem here is that we can't really judge some of the singers from the past, before clean recordings were available.

Now the orginal post asked for the best singing voice of all time, not for my personal favorite, so:

Dietrich Fisher-Dieskau

With Yma Sumac we need to include The French Songbird, Edith Piaf. She packed a lot of punch into a very small body, no amplification needed.
