That is not what I posted. Read the post again. All I stated was that it cannot be definitively determined that the infection was deliberate. I never stated that it was accidental. I never stated whether I thought it was accidental or not.

There are a lot of free AV programs out there, plus a lot of free anti malware and anti spy ware out there.

Spybot is another one I noticed not mentioned.

I had a major issue develope in the past couple of weeks; my computer guy couldn't fix/debug the computer. I finally resorted to a complete re-install.......apparently the virus had destroyed parts of the operating system. A re-install was necessary.

I was running Norton as well. My computer consultant told me to dump Norton for Microsoft Essentials. My Norton account expires soon and I will not be renewing.

Norton is not operating. As a side note. It is nearly impossible to uninstall Norton once it gets attached to your computer.

My computer started acting up; then I downloaded the most recent Norton and the problems accelerated, until the computer wouldn't even work in Safe Mode.....

I'm having issues as well, and I downloaded AVG. Computer worked good for a day, now it's back to where it was...


Otherwise...reason I titled this "Norton", is because a couple years ago, XSO thought he crashed his mother's computer. so we took it to this old man who's been working on them for years. come to find out XMIL had been running Norton. Were ya'll aware, Norton actually CREATES viruses, for the SOLE purpose of "fixing" them? However, sometimes, Norton can create a virus even IT can't fix. and when that happens...holy crap...Thankfully XSO didn't crash the computer, NORTON did. (Still cost me $1g, we bought XMIL a new HP touchscreen...can you tell I used to LOVE my MIL )

anyhow...i'm having the same issue. i have an Inspiron 9300. I only use it for pics and web. It loads quick, but from there out, sucks ass. I'm about to check out the Avast! someone above mentioned. XSO and I used to run system mechanics, but that wasn't really great for malware and viruses. Microsoft Security was ok, but ehhh...

anyways...the only real issue I'm having now, is chat don't want to load, and eccie is slowing down other pages, even if I open it in a new window. As long as eccie is open, firefox is CLOSED. I no longer run IE, it pisses me off BEYOND reason

I've had good luck with Trend Micro's Housecall and Malwarebytes. The thing is if you have a root sector virus none of the regular anti-virus and anti-malware products may effectively remove it.

I've had success before following the advice at MajorGeeks.com and Bleepingcomputer.com.

MODS: I apologize for bumping an old post. But I have valuable information to share that can help others. I don't do this often.

When getting Anti-virus software go to av-comparatives.org and look at their test results. They are the only independent testing company for anti-virus software. It takes a while to get used to finding the information but it gets easier to understand as you read more.

Please be aware that having more than 1 active agent software is not healthy for your computer.

An active agent software is easy to identify. If it is automatic and you do not have to press scan now, then it is an active agent.

If you have to press scan now then the program is an on demand scanner.

I reccomend having two anti-virus programs on your computer. 1 of them should be an active agent and the other an on demand scanner.

Here is the reason why: Each program has a database it compares your files against known viruses. The companies do not share their list of viruses with other software providers in most cases. This means that 1 software may have found a virus another 1 would have missed. So read AV comparatives and choose a quality active agent scanner. I like F-Secure or Microsoft Security Essencials (free). Then find a good on demand scanner, these are always free. They won't be listed on av comparatives. I would reccomend Bit defender Free edition.

If you get an active agent software which is not microsft security essentials, then a good on demand scanner is called "microsoft security scanner". It expires after 10 days but can be re-downloaded.

Also you may want to check your computer security now. This is a website that will attempt to hack into your computer for testing purposes only. It is not an actual attack and they are only trying to find out what ways your computer is vulnerable. https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
If it doesn't work then go to www.grc.com - services - shields up and test a few settings.

Here is my current setup.
F-Secure as main active scanner.
Malwarebytes Pro as an anti-malware scanner
Microsoft security scanner as my on demand scanner

I also use another service to further protect myself but it was mentioned in the security post already. I have my reasons for not wanting to name it.

when you run a Microsoft OS, you are running the most targeted operating system out there.
When you run a networking OS (either the client version or Server version) security was built in from the 1st line of code.

Several folks mentioned that you also need to protect a MAC. There are tons of different solutions for Windows PC's, but what is the best AV/anti malware-spyware software available for a MAC? I have both MACs and PCs in the house and use F-secure and Malwarebytes on the PC's.

Excellent choice but most that started on windows aren't gonna be able to set that up although it definitely has become more user friendly (GUI) than it used to be. I can't believe people still pay for AV protection on windows.
