Oh the joy of brain synapse misfires. Old Man Time has begun to play his dasdardly games on me.
I could have sworn I was told of one being in Memphis. Oh well, my recall of the trivia learned while at the Doe's in Little Rock 20 years ago is, these days, sketchy at best. Imagine how easily I become confused when the engram resides in my short-term memory... don't EVEN get me started.
The one thing I do remember is that in those days I ordered a side of beef in LR that was unbelievably good. I'll play tug-of-war with Old Man Time over memories like that one!

Correct in never was a Doe's Place to Eat in Memphis. Greenville was the original location with Paducah, KY the other family owned location. Little Rock, AR, Hot Springs, AR, Fort Smith, AR, Fayetteville, AR, Bentonville, AR, Baton Rouge, LA, Springfield, MO and Tulsa, OK are all Franchise.
And to the original question Leonards BBQ has some very good pulled pork, catfish and spaghetti.
Italian might be Elfo's in Germantown. It's owned by Alex Grisanti one of the sons of the famous Ronnie Grisanti. Very reasonable price for the quality.

The four that Top mentioned are one more than I was aware of (I knew of Greenville (the original, flagship spot), LR (President Clinton's favorite steakhouse from his LR days), and Hot Springs (I have a friend that lives about a stone's throw or two from the HS location); that there's one in Ft. Smith is news to me).
Cheers,

I know that we Memphians are statutorily required to bring visitors to the Rendezvous, but as far as the ribs go... honestly I prefer The Bar-B-Q Shop and Central BBQ to theirs.

Dallas come on now.....BBQ in Texas?.......Nope. Steaks/Beef yep........BBQ nope. Lol.
Hey SNL. There once (40 years ago) was a BBQ shack, spot, restaurant downtown LR That folks flocked to when they came to LR. Was very well known. FOR THE life of me I just can't think of the name of the place. It was damn near impossible to get a seat at lunch during the week.
Damn I've gotten old.

I miss Gridley's - the take-out spots just aren't the same.
Memphis just has great food period. We do. I think I am a minority on Gus' - would rather have KFC and Rendevous is good - if you like dry ribs. can you tell we in Mphs are serious @ BBQ? You can't go wrong w/Neely's BBQ spaghetti but not a big fan of their actual Q.
BEST Fried Chicken in the world:
Uncle Lou's on Millbranch. A-maze-ing. Thyme closed (sad face). erlings, twelve oaks and iris = top 3 in town.
Best freakin tea (hot or iced) Casa Blanca on Poplar Ave at Mendenhall. Can't drive past it without stopping.
Just good cookin - Alcenia's on main.
Best fried porkchop & greens - the gas station across the street from the IRS complex. Seriously.
And do not leave the area without a getting a fried Reelfoot Bologna sandwich...koolaid optional.
Highest concentration of diverse restaurants with good food is the Cooper Young area.
Shopping - Galleria if you are a mall rat, but I prefer Oak Court on Poplar.
Shopping, food entertainment is Poplar Ave - from County line to County line, whatever you want is gonna be on Poplar with Summer Ave being a redheaded stepchild alternative (read good deals) and South Main and the Cooper Young area the funky yet cool options.
Saddlecreek & the whole Poplar at Ridgeway to Kirby area are gonna be your priciest and remember MS - it's always gonna be cheaper just over the state line and Paula Deens Buffet at Harrahs is by far the best buffet at the Tunica Casinos.

Oh, gawd... let's try to avoid a "Texas vs. Memphis" 'cue holy war. Those never end well.
Small sample size issues apply, but in my experience (a few acquaintances, and a lot of food writers and foodie bloggers I've read), people who strongly prefer Texas 'cue hold Memphis 'cue in contempt (and I'm not exaggerating).
I haven't had enough samples to see if it holds in the other direction...
Cheers,
bcg
