Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken

A step up from KFC or Church's, Gus's serves up fried chicken that some say is the best in town. 2965 N. Gernantown Rd
near the mall

The best bbq is germantown commissary

Heavens... a visit to Memphis and no barbecue?

The Bar-B-Q Shop on Madison is my favorite, though Central BBQ on Central (duh! ) or on Summer Ave. is also beyond reproach, IMHO.

I think Neely's and Corky's are overrated, myself, but in fairness to Corky's I've only had their food catered at workplace luncheons; for all I know the food they serve fresh in the restaurant may be very good.

ETA: Just reread Dallas's post and just noticed her recommendation of Germantown Commissary (damn caffeine just doesn't kick in like it used to). Never been there yet, myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about the place. They'll have a huge hurdle to leap to pass up The Bar-B-Q Shop in my estimation. FWIW, the staff of The Memphis Flyer (the local alternative fishwrap) did pick The Bar-B-Q Shop as the best in Memphis for both ribs and BBQ not too long ago.

Enjoy the visit!

Cheers,

bcg

Default Memphis Food

Across the years Memphis has become a great town for food of different sorts. It really depends on what you want and what your budget might be. Gus' is great fried chicken and they have several locations including G'town parkway, downtown, and east Memphis. BBQ is great all over. Everyone has their favorite and it takes some time to find your own.

There are several very good mexican places and lots of bad one. Among my favorites are Las Delicias (on Park near U of M) and Las Tortugus (G'town parkway).

If you are looking for a bit more fine dinning, drop me a pm with some idea what you are looking for.

There is not a Doe's in Memphis. Greenville, MS; Little Rock; Hot Springs and Fort Smith

The areas east of Memphis like Cordova, Germantown and Collierville are probably the safest and have good shopping.

Schnuck's stores are outstanding, but limited to good parts of town. Most neighborhoods also have Kroger's. If you're staying downtown, try the Flying Fish if you like fried seafood.

Still a Doe's? News to me that there ever was one in Memphis. The four that Top mentioned are one more than I was aware of (I knew of Greenville (the original, flagship spot), LR (President Clinton's favorite steakhouse from his LR days), and Hot Springs (I have a friend that lives about a stone's throw or two from the HS location); that there's one in Ft. Smith is news to me).

Cheers,

I recommended the Rendezvous to someone at ASPD a few months before it folded, and he was less than impressed (so much so that I got a chewing out for recommending it).

I know that we Memphians are statutorily required to bring visitors to the Rendezvous, but as far as the ribs go... honestly I prefer The Bar-B-Q Shop and Central BBQ to theirs.

Cheers,

bcg
