You have not submitted to it in the context of a POW where you had no idea if that would be you last breath.

I have pet a Lion but not a wild one. I am not impressed by your petting a tame ass Lion. That is not really waterboarding, just as making a war movie like combat. All it does is simulate combat. That is WTF you have been through.
You care to brag anymore about your exploits?
As you can tell, I am not impressed.....Nor is John McCain for that matter.

Really....I have not heard of any that did not take the pay, did not have a boss, did not have a assignment to complete. That sounds like a job to me. It is great if you love your job but loving a job does not mean it is not a job.
I know that some may sign up because of duty or honor but how many folks do you know that quit a million dollar a year job to join the military? I know of one who did. Have you seen the Pat Tillman story? If so congrats on honoring such a man, if not I would highly recommend seeing it. A true story on what being a true patriotic person and family is. It is not so black and white such as some warriors like to claim. Most who do all of this chest pounding haven't even seen combat.
Have you seen the movie MA? I saw it twice. The second time it was just me and my girlfriend. No veterans bothered to show up. There were only three other beside me the first time I saw it. I would bet that not a poster one that leans right has seen it. My guess is Mazo and some other so called lefties have.

There is one moment, in a film with many such moments, that just punches you in the gut. It was at the public memorial service held for Pat Tillman in early May 2004, a couple weeks after his death in Afghanistan. Government efforts to turn Tillman into a patriotic superhero were at full tilt, and nothing was yet known to counter the official story that Tillman had been cut down in a terrorist ambush even as he saved the lives of his comrades. But this moment — at a memorial attended by pious dignitaries from across the country, all doing their part to assist in the rampant mythologizing of Tillman — should have come as a warning to the government that the Tillman family was not to be trifled with. After the solemn speakers had their say about who Pat Tillman was in life as well as in death, Tillman's youngest brother, Richard, skipped the steps and climbed up on the dais, dressed not for a funeral but in T-shirt and jeans, holding a pint of Guinness. He thanked everybody for coming and then, raising the glass, said, "Pat isn't with God. He's fucking dead. He wasn't religious. So thank you for your thoughts, but he's fucking dead."
But that we know the truth at all is owed to the extraordinary determination of Tillman's family, a foulmouthed and eclectic bunch of square-jawed hippies from San Jose, California, and in particular his mother, Mary. A more compliant family, more easily bamboozled by the institutions of American power at the highest levels, might have meekly, or readily, accepted the government's vigorous effort to turn Pat Tillman into a Sergeant York fantasy that it could then exploit relentlessly for propaganda purposes.

Actually I know someone who walked away from a lot more than 1m dollar job to join the special forces. For Some people it is just a job, for others it is true calling.
Of course now, that he is retired and back in good ole USA he is asking himself why did he risk his life for 20 years. Answer seems to be "to save lives and freedom of people who are completely self centered and hell bent on instant gratification without any sense of personal responsibility".

True calling? WTF does that mean? Does it mean that that is WTF he wants to do? That he enjoys that job so damn much that it really isn't a job to him? Well it might not be a job to him but it is a job to people above him in command and below him in command....a job where others depend on him doing his God Damn JOB.

Is that a true story or are you just trying to be funny?
You obviously have not seen the Pat Tillman movie. I highly recommend. That guy pulled no punches. It is documented that he was making over a million bucks a year.

no, but I just can't explain how they desensitize and educate you to the point where you're probably afraid but you feel you can make it through.....you're trained to feel like you can make it through

brag? I don't call it that.....you see a lot of combat and you sure as hell don't brag about it, but you sure are god damn glad to get out all in one piece! You look back on it and wow at how lucky you were here, how lucky you were there, etc.
As you can tell, I am not impressed.. so?...Nor is John McCain for that matter.
John McCain broke under torture and you can tell....I don't fault him for that, but the way I see it, his incompetence cost us 2 planes......he owes us 2 planes!
I bet TTH makes more money than you and I know I do.
one never knows who is who on the internet! Even among the people we know, we never know who really has what, but we do know what we have, don't we.......

I know that some may sign up because of duty or honor but how many folks do you know that quit a million dollar a year job to join the military?
there are many old money families who require military service of at least some of their sons....

So much for the ticking time bomb justification.
Apparently the new justification is we need to torture "because we might get a piece of information that, combined with 8 additional years of investigative work, might lead us to someone who is hiding out".
Flailing away for a rationale is indicative of not really believing anything you say....you're just going with the currently convenient argument.
Settle on something, and get back to me.
I do find it ironic that one of the pieces of evidence seems to be that the people being waterboarded actually lied about the courier. I will give the masochists among us credit for being able to turn the fact that waterboarding gave us bad information into their favor as an argument for waterboarding. If that's not brilliant, i don't know what is.

A Job?
I say this with the most sincere appreciation for our service men & women....
...and I'd sure some enlist out of a sense of duty and some because it is the "family business" so to speak...
...and this is probably the wrong week to say this...
....but for most I'll suggest for most it is a J-O-B
I'll share that I had a high school graduating class of ~200. About half a dozen or so enlisted...not a single one was in the top half of our class. This was around Desert Storm I so if ever morale for the troops was high it was then.
In the last year I've met several twentysomethings that were in deadend jobs and decided to enlist....if you asked them off the record they'd share the same thing: it had nothing to do with serving the country but getting some stability, whatever incentives the service was offering and...get this...military healthcare and benefits.
I meet a lot of former military folks and coming out they look pretty sharp, make great employees or co-workers, etc. and will talk about "service" and use the rest of the buzzwords and I really think it is genuine, but going in all I see are people looking for jobs becuase the service is the best option they have.
As my sig line says, meant with no disrespect....just sharing the lens I see things through based on my personal experiences...
