They already were bound to limit their power.

Panama won't be renewing a separate infrastructure deal which has allowed counties to owe China large amounts of debt that then tangentially gives them influence.

It wasn't a Panama Canal deal, it addressed other infrastructure including two ports near the canal that some felt uneasy about.

A far cry from what Trump has been saying in the media.

In reality, we know he's still whinging over that hotel deal that made him and his company look bad during his 1st term.

Never underestimate the ability of adults to cover for impulsive bloviation of dear orange leader with somewhat reasoned arguments.

Trump capital didn’t go towards building the development itself, but the tower used the Trump name for branding, and companies controlled by the Trump Organization would manage the property, which contained a casino, hotel rooms and condos.

Financially has little to do Trump's egomania. Trump is all about egomania. His name was on the hotel...

OTOH, I'm not sure how much the hotel fiasco has to do with Trump's wanting to 'take back' the Panama Canal.

Panama does have a 'deal' with China through the Belt and Road Initiative...which they have offered to drop.
