Living La Vida Socialist, the way they wanted it.
Seems like when you vote for Socialism, that's what you get.
Well... that a lot of walking around.

Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis after city council forces them to pay drivers more
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the city’s council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour.
Lyft called the ordinance “deeply flawed,” saying in a statement that it supports a minimum earning standard for drivers but not the one passed by the council.
“It should be done in an honest way that keeps the service affordable for riders,” Lyft said. “This ordinance makes our operations unsustainable, and as a result, we are shutting down operations in Minneapolis when the law takes effect on May 1.”
Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but news outlets reported that it issued a similar statement saying it would also stop service that day...

First of all rules and regulations are not the same as socialism. People in Minneapolis have been getting around well before uber and lyft came around. If they don’t want to compete under the new rules then they can leave. I’m sure that the cab companies are happy to see that uber and lyft have are now required to follow the same rules that they have to.

Hmmmmm... seems I've read that somewhere before.
Lemme check Encyclopedia Brittannica:
Quote:
The Communist Manifesto embodies the authors’ materialistic conception of history (“The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles”), and it surveys that history from the age of feudalism down to 19th-century capitalism, which was destined, they declared, to be overthrown and replaced by a workers’ society. The communists, the vanguard of the working class, constituted the section of society that would accomplish the “abolition of private property” and “raise the proletariat to the position of ruling class.”

Sound familiar Comrade? Though I didn't get into the whole controlling the means of production shtick.

First of all no one mentioned communism, but rather socialism. Again setting a minimum wage is not socialism and definitely not communism.
First, the minimum wage is not an example of socialism. Socialism is a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
Marx was fully opposed to the wage system and would no doubt have considered minimum wages as meaningless, inadequate attempts to pretty up wage slavery. Marx wanted to abolish capitalism, not make it slightly less terrible for workers.

I'm fairly certain that this is due to FOX news telling their audience that anything from the left is socialism, communism and marxist in general. They cannot tell the difference between any "Isms".
Add to that the "moving goalposts syndrome" and you've got just a lot of gaslit angry righty's who only care about owning the libs, vs. getting anything done. Uber and Lyft should be able to ensure that the minimum wage is met without any issues- by ensuring that they match the level of Drivers and the demand for the ride-share. All this "wage controls" wonky bullshit is just a ruse.
Minnesota has held a mininum wage law for a long time. As a matter of fact there is only 10% of states that don't have a minimum wage at all. And it wouldn't surprise anyone to know that they embody the right wing parties dumbest and lowest educated groups:
Alabama
Louisiana,
Mississippi
South Carolina
Tennessee
All of these shit-kicker red-necked, hillbillish, low-educatioin states and are controlled by evil mother fuckers and morally bankrupt cheaters- aka Republican Governors.
Ever wonder why these states, controlled by old white ppl are in such backwards run policies, that don't give a shit about their constituents?
Well it's simple.
They have a large black populous and they don't want any of those folks getting uppity or to lose an ounce of control, by getting a penny more than what is absolutely the least they can pay.
Talk about "keeping em down on the farm." A family of 3 who earn less than 25,000 dollars per year will be eligible for public assistance and food stamp programs; and as such, will be reliant on the government to supplement them. Doesn't it seem odd that the republicans who don't want to see a living wage, and thus have people no longer required to be on either welfare or snap benefits, are so against providing any wage guarantees that would take a large majority of ppl off those same government programs. The hypocrisy is amazing and absolutely insane in how the GOP would rather see ppl starve vs. get by. That's really them protecting the incomes of the Classes, vs. the masses. Protect the rich off the backs of the poor. Evil mother fuckers.
Nobody does it better than the GOP- the Racist party.

While communism has not been cited, I would point out that the Stalinist experience along with the Maoist economic record pretty clearly shows that pure economics cannot be dictated.

I'm not sure this is socialism Why Yes I Do. Maybe it's crony capitalism, of the type favored by Joe Biden, Democratic politicians, and many Republican politicians.
Recall Biden's handing out lots and lots of money to favored industries, like renewable energy and semiconductors. And he's requiring they use union labor in many cases. California's doing the same thing, and that's why public housing there costs 2X as much there as comparable houses built without the state subsidies.
This sounds like a gift to the taxi companies, at the expense of Uber and Lyft owner-operators. I'd bet the taxi drivers make less than the Uber and Lyft drivers.
The way this works, Uber and Lyft aren't actually guaranteeing a minimum wage. Instead they're guaranteeing drivers at least $1.40/mile and $0.51 per minute or $5 per ride, whichever is greater. So it's likely higher prices will reduce demand for Uber and Lyft. Drivers will spend more time sitting on their asses instead of transporting people. I bet they'll make less than they were before. It's a lose-lose-lose-win situtation. The Uber drivers, customers, and Uber itself are the losers. The taxi companies are the winners.
I wouldn't have a problem with a $15.57 minimum wage in Minneapolis. People ought to be able to make a living wage, and the people of Minneapolis and their elected officials should be able to set the minimum wage at whatever level they want. But this does sound pretty stupid.

Without looking. I'm guessing Minneapolis has an interest in the cab companies.

You mean: Biden's handing out lots and lots of other peoples money?!? KKKomifornia has something like a $14,50 minimum wage, except for fast food, which is $20. Would you believe the cut backs and layoffs are happening as a result? Go figure!
There use to be a time when a fast food job was a stepping stone. Sadly, it is becoming more of a pinnacle job for many. Guessing that gender studies degree that other people are paying for isn't worth what they thought it would be after all.
I remember a time, back in 1994, in Rochester Minnesota, when the minimum wage was something close to $4.50, advertising for fast food workers at $12 p/hr. Supply and demand I s'pose.
Good site to see the value of the minimum wage comparatively: The value of the dollar
