Seeing the uproar people are making about a balloon here, where we wrong not to tell our people we were overflying their country for a long while before the shoot down?

international air space wasn't exactly clear in the 1950s.

the jet age was just starting. all if not most aircraft were flying in the 15,000 - 30,000 ft range

the U2 spy overflights were by definition top secret.

but the Eisenhower administration should have been bit more frank with the public on the overflights.

it does appear he got bad information regarding USSR's missile defenses. it was thought at that time they didn't have missiles that could fly that high.

but then given who the Russians were; they didn't care about rules unless it suited them.

We overflew.
Russkies knew we overflew.
We were quite about it to gather info.
Russkies were quite because they didn't want people to know they couldn't do anything about it.
Russkies finally do something about it.
Americans surprised about it.

Today, every border is overflown by other countries and nobody raises hell.
