Durning the time that Joplin started Rag Time music, North of the tracks there used to be many wide open houses and gambling. Sedalia, was a big Railroad town with the maintenance shops located there: now long closed.
Later, Nat's was a place that had both girls and high stake card games that guys came from all over to participate. The State Fair is also in Sedalia, and during the Fair there was a lot of activity, at the Fair and at places in town. The house of Nat's kinda continued into about the 50s sometime after he died but just closed up sometime later. The early fifties changed things after Brown vs. the board of education, because the segregation started to loosen up; not just in Sedalia but a lot of the other towns. Warrensburg, Tipton, Jefferson City and others along the East/West rail line, all became much more integrated and all of the houses just seemed to go away as people could make contacts better - to to better communications.
