Sadly it happens. Change is inevitable, and if you don't adapt stores will go out of business.

Some of us are old enough to remember Egghead Computer Stores from the 1980s. They were ttlhe go to computing store into the 1990s. Then incredible universe came into the scene and put Egghead and many other smaller stores of of business.

In the early 2000s Best Buy and Fry's came into to the scene and by the early 2000s Incredible Universe was forced to closed.

Now the online retailers have taken Fry's from us. Why drive 25 miles to stop at a fry's when you can order an HDMI cord from Amazon and have it delivered next day.

Unhappy

When I moved to Austin in 2000, I think they had just opened the Austin location. As a tech geek, I remember going in and being amazed at the selection and variety of things to get. Got my first electronic soldering tools and supplies there. Then, as the years wore on, they became a place to see stuff in person...and I would buy online for cheaper lately. The last time I went in, about a year ago, the computer components section was getting bare. Last photos I saw of the shelves were really bad. Turns out they did a lot of their business "on consignment", so I guess the suppliers stopped sending supply to them because they couldn't move it as fast anymore. Sad. This video is a nice summary of its history and analysis for downfall...

Micro Center is still around.

I hated Incredible Universe which by the way was owned by Tandy Corporation, same company that owned Radio Shack.

I remember walking into Incredible Universe in Houston and they wouldn't let me get past the front door lobby and browse their shelves of electronics unless I first handed them my driver's license, sign up for a paid membership to get their prices which at the time were not lower than Best Buy.

I said no thanks.

That location is now a Harris County Community College campus.

A few years ago, I flew out to California to bury my parents. While I was there my brother wanted to get a computer part so he took me to a Frys. I had never heard of them before, I was amazed to see such a huge store like that. We have nothing like that in New England.

It is sad to hear they are closing down.

Didn’t Egghead reinvent itself to Newegg?

I went to the Fry's south of Houston in fall of 2019 and could see the writing on the wall then. Very little on the shelves and was there was crap. Used to be a great electronics retailer.

Can't stand these stores now, where you go in to buy something like a computer cooling fan. Likely they will say, "That's proprietary, you need to go to our repair service in the front.".

So we can pay $ 140.........or buy it for $ 7 on Amazon, and do it ourselves. Is it any wonder why Amazon is winning ?

Banning shopping in person helps Amazon et al to get rich. Amazon contributes to the campaigns of those who advocate bans on shopping in person! It's rather simple.
