Rep. Katherine Clark, the assistant House speaker, predicted Friday that the full chamber could vote to again impeach President Donald Trump as early as the middle of next week for inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol in a deadly riot.
© Alex Wong/Getty Images House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Katherine Clark insisted that she and her colleagues “can use procedural tools to get articles of impeachment to the floor for a House vote quickly." “Donald Trump needs to be removed from office, and we are going to proceed with every tool that we have to make sure that that happens to protect our democracy,” Clark (D-Mass.) told CNN in an interview Friday morning.
“If the reports are correct, and [Vice President] Mike Pence is not going to uphold his oath of office and remove the president and help protect our democracy, then we will move forward with impeachment to do just that,” she said.
Clark acknowledged that House Democrats “have limited time” to launch the proceedings against the president — who only has 12 days left in office and was already impeached by the chamber in 2019 on charges of abusing his power and obstructing congressional investigations.

But Clark insisted that she and her colleagues “can use procedural tools to get articles of impeachment to the floor for a House vote quickly. We have already had [House Judiciary Chair] Jerry Nadler … say that he will use those tools to bring the articles as fast as possible.”

Pressed further on the timing of the potential proceedings, Clark said: “That will be, you know, [as] early as mid-next week.”
House Democrats “can act very quickly when we want to,” she added, arguing that lawmakers “cannot hide behind procedural rules. This is the time for action. This is a crisis of our Constitution and of our democracy.”
Clark’s remarks come after scores of congressional Democrats, numerous former federal officials, some governors and at least one Republican House member have all demanded Trump’s immediate removal from office — either by impeachment or the Cabinet’s invocation of the 25th Amendment.
On Thursday, both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called on Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, as did Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.). Several administration officials have resigned since the pro-Trump on Wednesday, which resulted in the deaths of five people — including a U.S. Capitol Police officer.

But if they can take steps in Congress to rid this nation of Trump and Trumpism, they should.

It’s gonna happen. Maybe it’s time for the great Schism. Maybe the return of the Whigs or the Democratic-Republicans or the National Republicans. Or maybe the Cruz Hawley Jordan Brook Tuberville Johnson group will break off and become ReTrumplicans.

Did the first impeachment remove him? No it did not and neither will a second. It would take hearings in the Senate and a 2/3 vote to convict and that ain't gonna happen. Be satisfied that he'll be gone in a couple of weeks.


And yes, he can run again but he'll never get the nomination. Republicans in charge of such a nomination will never give him a shot.

I believe you’re correct as it would take 16 Republicans to go along with it. They might get 4-5. But forcing a house vote which Nancy could quickly do won’t hurt her or her caucus at all. And they’ll run ad after ad in 22 saying these congressman wanted to overturn the election and wouldn’t even impeach a president that led an insurrection against congress. Won’t matter for Mo Brooks but it’ll matter for Republicans in swing districts.

Nancy is trying to shore up her house majority.

I know it should be satisfying that he'll be gone in a couple of weeks. I've been looking forward to that for years.

However, since Nov. 2, I'm not going to be satisfied with Trump simply leaving.

He and his team must be held accountable and responsible. While I would not support Congress wasting too much time on this, I will not be satisfied until the Trump crime family is imprisoned, exiled or both.

A man without a soul deserves no country.

I don't think getting 16 Republicans to go along with it is necessarily a stretch. They want him gone. I just dont think they have time unless they write the articles in a way that makes it really easy for them.


There is precedent for impeachment trials after the accused has left office. In that case it would be a slam dunk. Sure, that doesnt protect anyone against what that lunatic does over the next 12 days but it does prevent him from ever running again. I do not think he's going to run again but it would be nice to take that option off the table.

Impeaching Trump would be a stupid thing for the Dems to do. But based upon past history, the Dems often seem intent upon finding the stupidest way forward and selecting it. The first impeachment was stupid, this one would be much worse. It would be spite and vengeance, nothing more. It would actually be a stronger argument than the ephemeral BS of the last one, but this time it would have no effect. He is gone in 12 days, and an impeachment would do nothing other than be bulletin board material for the Zombies.

Put him in a virtual cocoon for 12 days. Let him leave, he is already disgraced in most eyes. Then if you have a case, prosecute him. But impeachment is the wrong tool at this point.

What the Dems should be doing is trying to actually get the two parties to take a few steps towards civility and cooperation on issues that actually both agree on but have refused to cooperate because "They are the evil enemy". I believe from what I have seen, Biden can do that. Contrary to the far end nut jobs on here (which are not all the RW posters), I hear a lot of things that Harris--while more liberal than Biden--is not a wacked out progressive. McConnell is still around but has lost some of his power obviously, so maybe he will not be the dogmatic dictator he has been for several years.

Unfortunately Pelosi will probably be emboldened to be the kind of despot McConnell has been.

As a country we went 1.5 for 3 in this election cycle. Some chance for the government actually trying to govern,, but that depends on Pelosi keeping her ego/revenge out of it (I hope she will but a lot of past history says that might be wishful thinking), and both McConnell & Pelosi keeping the rabid members of their parties somewhat under control.

We shall see.

If Pelosi can't control the House, they'll vote her out and elect a new Speaker. That's how democracy works.

How does that keep him from running again? OI have seen nothing that implies that.

It would just make him a martyr in the eyes of the Zombies, making their mindless devotion to the Cult of Trump even more rabid.

I am hoping--and the last 24 hrs seem to indicate it may be true--that the rumors that Trump was made an offer he couldn't refuse by the Republicans might be true. If so, Pelosi & the Dems should bite their tongue for 12 days. To do otherwise could result in the Reps unchaining Trump as revenge.

It is possible that both parties have already shaken hands on an impeachment option, but I sincerely doubt it. It would have to be very, very carefully structured so it shot Trump alone--no collateral damage to the Republicans writ large. I do not thing the current political climate has enough trust in it to construct and pull off such a thing.
