The name of the military post didn't matter that much
The most important relationship was with the unit you were in. That's where your roots were. Not the place you were at.
Every military unit in existence today has only been associated with the United States. Units move from post to post on a regular basis depending on the needs of the service.
Having a military base named after a person should be reserved for men who kept the faith with the United States.
I think that's reasonable. I also think if it were possible to ask the namesakes themselves that they would not argue the point.
There is a possible notable exception I'm aware of (I don't know when all the bases were named, just the ones I was stationed at). Ft. Bragg was named before the civil war started.
It's much easier to figure out what to do with a few instead of a bunch.

what exactly are you on????
Ft. Bragg was not in existence before the civil war. it was established in 1921. it started as Camp Bragg in 1917. this is well past the civil war.

The town of Ft. Bragg CA was founded in 1857.
So that removes the uncertainty of that name.
Looks like you're still so butthurt from your "fact check" bullshit thread that you miss the point of this thread.
Military people's loyalty is to the units they are or were in. The post they were at is below the unit on the list.
If you had been in the military you would know that.
Your loyalty would be more to the 82nd Airborne or 18th Airborne Corp, etc.
Ft. Bragg, the name, is where the unit (your family) happens to live right now.
Looks like you would stay at "Tara" after your family (unit) moved on to South Carolina or some such to stay in the fight. "Tara" may have been burned but Gen. Sherman is still around there somewhere.
The main group of complaints comes from non-military or people who want monuments to people who fought against the Union..
Or who freakin' fred would call racist and gay.

I didn't know of the one in california.
you didn't mention in your post that Fort Bragg was in california, not South Carolina if which I thought you were talking about.
the garrison was established in 1857, the town wasn't. that was established in 1889.

I was stationed at Ft. Lee Virginia for most of my army service.
I couldn't care less if they renamed the post, although I would prefer it if they kept the name.

It is the unit, not the base.
My team left mugs behind at perhaps a dozen NCOs and a few OCs.
Highly amusing to ask the bar to dust one off that's been on the wall for over 20 years. Especially if it's Calvary at a Navy hole.

its not so much changing a name that bothers me...its giving in to the wrong people that sticks in my craw....people who aren't so much about a name as they are about destroying America one step at a time
the real goal is the constitution one way or another
its funny, they raise the issue that some installations are named for people who fought against the u.s. as they fight against the u.s.

fuzzy headed DPST's are kneeling to OBLM marxist demands to destroy history.
Address the hate - most of it manufactured by Race-baiters like sharpton and OBLM for marxist purposes
Use history to learn and advance - which is what the Marxists want to destroy and start fresh with a marxist society on a burned America foundation.

Those people wanting to destroy America one step at a time have been very successful.

You give up too easily. They've been trying to complete Phase 1, which was to disarm the Conservatives. That has failed. Miserably.
Conservatives are CONSERVATIVE and tend to not engage in knee-jerk responses to threats .... don't see MLK statues being torn down!
If 10% of the population wants to start a war ... enjoy!

I agree, its the unit, not the name. Ft. Bragg is in NC not CA. I had several Uncles in 82nd Airborne and a Cousin1 173rd Airborne.
SpeedRacerXXX, I was pretty close to you; I was in Ft.Eustis VA.
