1990's Cowboys Vs. Houston Oilers The Match Up That Never Happened

This would be the greatest fantasy Superbowl ever eh?

Talk about Star Studded.

The Cowboys have the greatest offensive and defense line of all times. Players like Larry Allen , Charles Haley, the hardcore psycho Mark Tuinei, the Grisley Bear Erik Williams, Big Dawg Nate Newton...and of course Americas golden kid trio consisting of Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith, and Michael Irvin. Not to mention Prime Time Deon Sanders and Woodson. It was the greatest team of all time. However the Oilers were no slouches and could have given them Cowboys a run for their money.

Who could forget the great Big Ray Childress. I'd take Ray over JJ Watt to this day. Ray was fucking hardcore. Bruce Matthew's, Mike Munchak...then you had the comeback kids Warren Moon and that Houston recieving core was pretty dam amazing. Earnest Givens, Haywood Jeffeies, Bubba McDowell and Earl Campbell.

That team could have Challenged the Cowboys for some of those Superbowls. The oilers just didnt have the proper ownership and coaching. Jerry Jones has never given a fuck about hiring criminals and guys with suspect character they won him Superbowls.

Is this an all time Oiler's team or the Oilers of the 90's? Earl Cambell retired in 1985. The Bills also showed the flaws in this run and shoot style offense with that great playoff comeback.

Frank Reich led the biggest comebacks in both NCAA and NFL.
I watched them both.
I remember falling asleep just before halftime of the Bills game thinking the Oilers had it in the bag. I woke up sometime in the third quarter and was like WTF just happened!
The Oilers came out in the second half playing not to lose the game.

I have seen a lot of interviews and the NFL network had that show about that comeback. The consensus was that there was no cohesion with the Oilers, the offense and defense did not get along with each other. Remember when Buddy Ryan threw a punch at Kevin Gilbride?

That was a rare and awesome moment in TV history

Sure, there was a divide between the offense and defense. Ryan hated the run and shoot because it didn't sustain drives and give his defense time to recover and make adjustments on the sidelines. He was pretty vocal about that.

Ryan threw that punch at the end of the season following the comeback because he was pissed off at Gilbride for trying to pad a lead against the Jets before halftime and Cody Carlson fumbled. They went 12-4 that season. I don't remember anyone being pissed about a 25 point lead to end the half in the wild card game against the Bills the year before. Ryan wasn't a part of that team but he definitely was a loose cannon at times.

As far as the comeback goes, a lot of things happened just right or just wrong, considering your perspective. Halftime adjustments and some special teams plays and blunders is what did it. Not lack of cohesiveness between O and D. Not in my opinion.

The Oilers defense was considered "dirty" when Glanville was head coach, when the dome was the House of Pain. and if you watch interviews with players from the late 80's and early 90's the offensive players and the defensive players were constantly fighting each other before, during, and after practice. I agree though that Pardee's offense did not allow for the defense to rest up during the game.

Glanville liked it that way. He instigated it in a lot of cases. He wanted the team to be nasty. It worked to a certain extent and he could reel them back in because he had the personality to manage the egos he was feeding.



Pardee was a different kind of guy, being a Junction Boy and known for hard nosed football I think he liked the nastiness but couldn't manage it the way Glanville could.


What Pardee knew better than managing personalities was how to run a wide open offense having been a product of six-man Texas high school football.

Even though Jim Kelly wasn't part of the great comeback game, he was the QB under Pardee for the Houston Gamblers.

I disagree that they were dirty...they were just some hard hitting muthafuckers led by Big Ray Childress

Aggressive, nasty, dirty. Call it what makes you feel better. Fact is the Glanville Oilers were the most penalized team in the NFL with plenty of calls for late hits and roughing. Glanville had no problem with it.

Other coaches publicly denounced Glanville for his tactics and some even ran up the score on him if they had the chance because they disliked him so much.

I am all for aggressive, don't come across the middle message hits.
When the penalties actually keep your team from winning then it is too much.
