I try to stay up-to-date and respect folks. My kids called me out years ago when they were in middle school that they're taught the term "African-American" in school and I think it's more respectful now and I use that term rather than "black."
More good examples are Asian-American and Native American... instead of "Oriential" or "Indian."
I have been asked every week of my life: "Are you Thai? Filipino? Hawaiian? Mexican? African-American?
I prefer to just think of myself as a human being!

That makes sense to me. I understand your point of being respectful and not offending others.

Haha yeah I get that. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's an interesting backstory to that. Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain on a western route so he could travel to India and get involved in the spice trade. Spices were more valuable than gold back then. He made a mistake while sailing and landed in the Americas instead.
Either he didn't want to admit he was wrong or he genuinely thought he had arrived in India, but when he saw the first locals, he started calling them "Indians" even though they were Native Americans. That name stuck and hence the confusion.

OAN...I say black. I do not and will not say African American. I only refer to real Africans as Africans.
It makes a lot of white people uncomfortable to say black😂🤣😂🤣
I refer to Asians as Asians...not oriental. Unless I know their home country then I refer specifically to that country
If you're truly Mexican, I'll refer to you as Mexican. Otherwise Hispanic/Latino/Latina are my go to's. Unless again...I know their home country.

Yep that's what I do too!

I like to use the N word - Negro or Negroes
If I am speaking Spanish - Negro or Negra, usually preceded by muchacho or muchacha respectively

I didn't receive any emails from anyone (racist or otherwise)
Ok so who is petitefunlady? Where did she come from? Why haven't I noticed her? Those pics are amazing.
Back on topic. Not touching the race topic with a 10 foot pole.

Call me black. African-American is "ok" since I'm a descendant of the diaspora. African-American is useless for people born in Africa because they would refer to themselves by their nationality (Senegalese, Nigerian, Congolese etc.) or by their ethnic group (Wolof, Igbo, Yoruba, Akan, Mende, Mandinka etc).
Cheers lol.

Asian in the US = East Asian (Chinese, Korean etc).
Asian in Europe = Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi/Bengali etc.
Oriental makes sense in Europe to distinguish East from South Asians but is definitely considered a bit offensive stateside.

Yep you nailed it and both Europeans & Americans are right in their own way. Chinese are Asians and Indians are Asians too.
If you look at a map of Asia, you will see India and China are located right next to each other. As in they share a long border together and fight with each other sometimes for border territory. They're direct neighbors. Both countries are part of Asia in the same way that both the USA & Canada are part of North America.
The problem is that people want everything to be very simple so they can file away different groups of people in their head. So Americans wants all Asians to look the same way because it's easier for them to understand. If you tell an American that Indians are Asians too, they will disagree with you. Even when you explain to them that India is located right next to China, they'll still be confused.
Also, why should all Asians look the same? Asia is the largest continent in the world. It makes far more sense that there are different ethnicities in the largest continent in the world rather than assuming that everyone in Asia looks the same.

Your kids are wrong but I'm sure they mean well
Just use Black, unless you know for sure if a person has at least 1 parent who's an American Descendant of slaves(or slavery) or ADOS
Most Black immigrants will correct you if you call them AA
African American was originally intended to identify ADOS only, but through the years, every black person in America has been referred to as AA
Being born in America or holding American citizenship, doesn't make one AA
The "African" part comes from being a descendant of slavery, not because we can point on the map where our ancestors came from
An American with 2 Nigerian parents,is a Nigerian American no matter where he was born
In short,African-Americans=descendants of African slaves=not immigrants or children/grandchildren of immigrants
Cheers
