Why GM CEO Mary Barra killed Chevrolet cars, approved likely plant closures
FTA:

Cut thousands of jobs despite profits
With GM making good money and the North American auto industry zipping along at a healthy pace, it might seem like a strange time for GM to close several plants and cut thousands of jobs.

But that's exactly what Barra announced Monday. She's transforming GM into a more efficient company that can survive the industry's long-expected shift toward autonomous vehicles.

Then she should be repurposing the plants. Self driving cars are still a ways away although 20 years from now 80% will be self driving. They will probably be "self building" to some extent. Many people won't own cars, there will be "uberlots" that people will call. You'll need an id to do this.

But GM is ungrateful. What happened to the large percentage of the company that went to the union? I read many of the plant workers are getting a hefty retirement package.

Really simple to understand ,- SUVs and Trucks selling Cars and battery cars and self NOT. GM put a lot of money ( gov bail out) and time into dead ends

They always say that. "best for the company".
But how is firing thousands of your workers, but paying a BIG bonus to some of your executives "Best for the company"??

they do that to show that they are making a profit. they rig the numbers so the shareholder see it as impressive, the excs get more stock bonuses. this prolly more for the board consumption.
