back to the Beatles..

the Beatles and the Beach Boys both hit the music scene in 1962, Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson are 2 days apart in age. from 1962-66, IMO, the Beach Boys stomped all over the Beatles, culminating with Pet Sounds (and the single, "good vibrations"). McCartney heard Pet Sounds, and upped his game..

McCartney began playing the piano like Brian Wilson had been doing, and the McCartney-led Beatles kicked it in gear from 1967-69.. John Lennon was growing disinterested and contributing much less in those years. Wilson was mired in drug addiction and psychosis and quit touring with the group, but he still turned out cuts like "Heroes and Villians" and "Surf's Up" that made the Beatles look like light weights.

Forgot to add in Prince if we are talking Michael Jackson.

Duran Duran is very underrated and they made the theme song to my favorite James Bond film of all time, "A View to a Kill."

The Beatles set the bait for me. My parents saw them a bit when we lived in Germany. But it was The Doors that set the hook for me, as a teenager. As for the Beatles, I always liked Harrison's music the most.

my favorite Bond film, too, but unrelated to Duran Duran's theme song.. very related to the Cowgirl scene, in which Grace Jones mounts Roger Moore.. lucky Bastard.

agree, if we are talking song-for-song.. while Harrison was not nearly as prolific as McCartney or Lennon, his songs were stronger, relatively speaking. and his songs were HIS songs, the other Beatles were basically absent.. "love you to", something", here comes the sun".. great stuff.

Sacrilege!!

The Dark Side of the Moon is 3rd best selling album of all time, having spent 741 weeks on the Billboard album chart and when Billboard changed its methodology in 2009, it re-entered the chart and it has now spent a total of over 900 weeks on the chart since its release in 1973.

The only other 2 best selling albums to surpass it as 2nd and 1st best selling album of all time are AC/DC Back in Black and Michael Jackson's Thriller, respectively.

no list of English rock can omit Pink Floyd! honestly, i think the band became much better without Sid Barrett. and not just because Sid might have been a bit unstable. "Live at Pompeii" wouldn't been possible with him still in the band. and there are other albums i could mention.

two examples from "live at Pompeii"

the full cut of "Echoes" is 24 minutes but it doesn't show the band live. BAH. so here's a part 1 from Pompeii. RIP Sid, but you could never have created this ..
