Perhaps British Prime Minister May doesn't understand that President Trump has little authority in telling a US Media Outlet what it can publish.

The President, in conjunction with our Intelligence Agencies can find out who is doing the leaking and if laws were broken, take appropriate measures. But once the News Outlet has the info, they are pretty much free do do what they wish with it.

A lot of people may not like it, but that's what the 1st Amendment is about.

You completely missed the point.

This isn't about the Brits not understanding the US's First Amendment. Pretty sure Prime Minister May is quite aware of how our Constitution and Bill of Rights work.

It's about command and control of US intelligence agencies, which should not leak like a sieve, especially when sensitive investigations are underway and when recklessness can cost lives. The US President should at all times make every effort to assure that doesn't happen, and apparently PM May has every intent of imploring him to do so. Nothing inappropriate about that.

Taking action against the leakers is like deciding to lock the barn door when the stolen horses have already been moved to another state. If you don't ensure discipline within the intelligence agencies, some of their actions may be worse than useless.

We've got a big IT problem in the Federal Govt. They play by a separate set of rules than private industry. If you don't comply with different regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley your companies CEO could go to jail. Don't comply with different state and federal tax laws? Your CFO and many of the top CPAs could go to jail. Don't comply with the many records retention acts? People from all over the company could go to jail.

The top brass have to sign various compliance documents testifying compliance to various rules, regulations and reporting requirements. Failure to do so means SEC could start pulling licenses.

Do the Feds need to comply with a bunch of this? No. It's not because they are not a private entity. It's just because they have exempted themselves from the rules. Billions if not Trillions of dollars are unaccounted for and the Feds just go on their merry way.

The Feds need to eat their own dog food.
