In the South its all coke. Around Laffy my relatives always said "pop". "Soda" or "soda water" seems to be common term used by people who I've met from Philly and NE. It is also used among black people in SW Louisiana at least back in the 60's and 70's.
As for my family, the term soft drink was used and sometimes coke.
Note that the first bottling of carbonate soft drinks was in Vicksburg, MS by Joseph Biedenharn of Monroe and it was Coca Cola thus making the brand the first national brand of carbonate soft drink and the Biedenharns quite wealthy and a major stockholder of the company. He also started the first crop dusting service which became Delta Airlines.
