Those Riqsue Victorians
The Victorians had a way with words, particularly with
vulgarities. If someone called you "bracket-faced" that meant
you were unattractive or ugly. A "dirty puzzle" referred to a
promiscuous woman, while a "hoydon" was an uncultured woman.
"Mutton-mongers" were frequenters of brothels and a "public
ledger" was a prostitute. "Whirlygigs" was used to describe a
