For "statistical" purposes for the "discussion," I would not attempt to quantify "simple assaults" of police officers, which mean assaults by verbal threat or threatening action, although pointing a deadly weapon (firearm or knife or other similar instrument) at a police officer is an "aggravated assault" ......

... because such crimes as resisting arrest are often not charged and consequently the statistics would be deceptive at best.

In fact "resisting" is so common it seems like prosecutors think its part of the job.

The "assault" you described ... "pointing a rifle at someone" requires the "victim" KNOWING that the weapon was pointed at them ... since that is an element of the offense. Just hearing the noise is insufficient.

Apparently there were officers who were being fired upon and returning fire prior to the robot taking care of his ass .... and those persons would be rightfully considered to have been "assaulted" ... but that offense would and should be "booked" as an "attempted capital murder" since a firearm (presumed to be a deadly weapon) was discharged at the officers. The proof issue would be for the State to prove the shooter had the specific intent to kill the specific officer, so the "charging" decision ought to be "aggravated assault on a public servant" (Texas law) because the penalty range is the same, but the burden of proof is lesser ...it only requires the officer to be fear of his life or serious bodily injury and doesn't require the specific attempt of a capital murder charge.

Statistics also show that animus towards cops has been getting worse under Odumbo: "From 2008 to 2011, the number of officers murdered increased from its lowest figure in two decades (40) to the second highest in that time period (68), representing a 70% increase [on Odumbo's watch]."
