Again, just to make it clear, no active symptoms have to be present to transmit either form of herpes. While one is more contagious with active symptoms, it is not required. And it is possible to get either version in either location. EX : Genital herpes to mouth by DATY, etc

The initial symptoms usually appear within 1 to 3 weeks of exposure to the virus and last 7 to 10 days (for cold sores) or 7 to 14 days (for genital lesions).

How common is herpes? Pretty common. As far as exposure goes, if you're lucky you were exposed to type 1 (oral) as child so you carry the antibodies which provide somewhat of an immunity to type 2 (genital). Considering the lesser of two evils I'd take type 1 over type 2. So tell your friend to go celebrate because now he's - technically - protected from the yuckier herpes, regardless of where type 1 presents on the body.

Wow I've got neither. I've never had a cold sore in my life. Thank you God.

Nice article I found on the subject. It contains supporting info for THN's comment about having one makes it harder to get the other.

And that still doesn't mean you don't have it. Many people are carriers and have the virus without ever having a symptom, but can still spread the virus.

Sadly, cold sores (Herpes simplex virus) and canker sores are not the same. http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/guide/canker-sores

i think I learned something here....

Risk Factors

Oral herpes (cold sores)

Everyone is at risk for oral herpes from HSV-1. In fact, studies suggest that by adolescence, 62% of Americans are infected with HSV-1. By the time people are in their 60s, up to 85% have been infected.

You know what I just realized? No one talks about crabs anymore. Why doesn't someone start up a good "crabs" thread, just to shake things up a bit?

When you look at infection rates, read carefully as global and regional infection rates vary widely
