I know that. I have some 16 bit software that won't run on the newer operating systems and it is software that I really really like and I am not going to spend $3k for new software that probably won't work as well as the old. Just because it isn't supported doesn't mean it can't get the job done.

I had bought a new computer with windows 8, and after turning it on and not having a clue how it was supposed to work, I turned it off and never used it. If Steve Ballmer had been close enough to punch, I would have.

Tons of privacy concerns about the default settings on Windows 10. I'll wait until the outrage of people who have become first adoptors have found them all and Microsoft is forced to change the default settings. Or I may just scrap the whole damn thing for a Macbook, all my other devices are Apple, while not without their own problems, leaps and bounds better than anything Microsoft has done.

Being unsupported means it is very easy to access that computer without you knowing. Don't connect it to the internet if you use it for anything you need to prptect.

Microsoft has a mode called Windows 7 xp mode which can run windows xp software on a windows 7 computer. You can buy the windows 7 software and replace windows 8.

Another option is to install linux Zorin operating system with Wine and run your program in that. Zorin runs very similar to windows but has all the security of linux.

Third option pay the $3k to upgrade. It is $3k vs all the info on that computer publically available and for sale on the dark web. For example your medical records are worth $750 and a credit card number is about $1 - $100. Other data goes for various prices.

If is super easy to get compromised. Visit a site like cbs that has a dropper hidden in the java code that opens a backdoor to your computer and then have a program copy all your data. Next step is to add that computer to the network of zombie machines that is used to infect or attack other machines. There were around 200 computers I clean up last year that had this exact senario done to them. Infected from the cbs website with the zeroaccess virus.

Windows xp is like fucking without a condom.

Re: Privacy
The default installation of Win10 is set up to collect browsing habits and other information and uses it for targeted advertising (just like Google, Bing...) and possibly sells that info. There are quite a few web sites that show you how to turn those functions off. I did it and it only took about 2-3 minutes.

Unfortunately we live in a world where data is constantly being collected on us, not just by Microsoft, but from everyone. Ever notice that if you Google lawnmowers, then open Facebook, you start seeing lawnmower adds? It sucks, but what can we do? Nothing! I use private browsing whenever possible, but I doubt that helps much.

I was rushed yesterday but the privacy concerns go well beyond that.

-The default setting is for your contacts to be able to access your wifi without you giving them a password. The quote was that this is was supposed to eliminate that "awkward" moment when someone has to ask for your wifi password. It is awkward because you are being asked if you trust someone enough to access to your wifi and therefore any and all devices that are on that network.

-The default is keep the microphone and webcam on.

There are other concerns, read the link posted on page one of this thread but just think how dangerous those two things put together could be to people in the hobby.

There is no Windows 9 because of Windows 95/98. It can get confusing. Win9x vs win 9.

Confusing as changing the interface and not providing drivers for older printers ?
