Default Home Security Systems...Video...

I am considering installing a video monitoring system (interior and exterior) of my residence. Primarily for times when I am away and want to check on the status of things.

Any affordable systems that you would recommend.

- ability to record at night/day
- ability to check video from internet
- high quality imaging
- ability to store recorded data for up to 30 days ?
- ability to shut system on/off remotely?

How secure are systems that rely on the internet?

How much would I have to spend for a system that meets my above requirements?

Thanks in advance.

This is a pretty broad topic and the general answer is that it depends on how much you want to spend. In my opinion, and if your budget allows, I wouldn't buy anything less than a HD DVR system, one that has cameras that can record in full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution (1080p) with the bare minimum being 720p HD 1280 x 720 (720p). Most people choose to go with HD products (which are measured in megapixels) rather than analog standard definition cameras (measured in TV Lines). 700 TVL cameras paired with a 960H DVR will allow you to identify someone up to 10 feet from the camera. HD cameras will allow you to identify someone at 50 feet or further (depending on the model).

Systems that begin with these sort of specs will usually have the other requirements you listed available as well. My system is "out the box" but the install was pretty complex. I could gush about it for a while, but due to its uniqueness, it would be a huge tell.

Expect to pay about $1000+ for such a system, not installed. However, there are a number of systems available by different manufactures. If facial recognition at night over any significant distance isn't a concern, then you could probably get away with a more budget friendly package offering

Try checking with the security monitoring companies in your area, if you are thinking about this from a security perspective. Most these days that offer audio/video also have a way for you to view it online. Plus, you have someone who can actually call the cops if someone breaks in while your down 15 fathoms, instead of hours later when you check it at the hotel and that sight of your now empty house shows up on your laptop and ruins your vacation.

Not trying to shill for the companies, but you should really think what you are wanting the system for and deciding how much risk you are willing to handle.

If your just looking to record activities for later viewing, then define what level of quality you need and buy something that meets it.

Here's a link to a company that offers home security. Check it out see if it meets your needs.
