Memorial Day

Memorial Day, formerly known as “Decoration Day”, is now observed the last Monday of May, each year. On this day, we honor the memory of those men and women of our armed services, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Without the sacrifices that secured our victories, we would not enjoy the freedoms, which we so often take for granted.
Traditionally, the graves of veterans are decorated with US flags.

The US flag is to be briskly raised to full staff, then lowered somberly to half staff. This symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice of over 1 million US veterans. At noon, it is raised again to full staff. This symbolizes the raising of their (the fallen’s) memory to the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

Thank you to all that have served and sacrificed. I hope that we never take for granted the days, weeks, months and years away from your families. I hope we never take for granted the holidays, birthdays, births and deaths you missed. I hope we never take for granted the impact your decision to serve has made on you. I hope we never take for granted the freedom you won and maintain with your blood, sweat and tears.

I also thank the Fathers, Mothers, Husbands, Wives, Brothers, Sisters, Sons and Daughters who wake up without their loved one because they are away or at peace.
