The panhandling problem in dallas is ridiculous
I have never seen anything like this anywhere. Everywhere you go there is someone begging for money. Pisses me off.
I grew up dirt poor so i know what it's like to have nothing but my parents would never resort to begging. My dad worked three jobs and my mom worked and the kids took care of each other. I worked with my dad on odd jobs when i was 12. We would go without instead of even think about begging.
I used to give out money but no more. It is getting out of hand. Why doesn't dallas have ordinances against it?

Dallas does have ordinances against panhandling.
I don't like being accosted, and asked for money, when I leave the grocery or convenience store, or I'm out and about.
But if they're nice about it, and I don't feel too threatened, I'm alright with it. I have quite a bit of the Bag Lady Syndrome going, inside, though.
So I try to be understanding.
Edited to add: Sometimes, it even annoys the shit out of me, too.

Well, yeah. I feel that a lot of people are homeless because of circumstances beyond their control.
But I would guess, and it's a fairly good guess because of some background that I have, that the majority of homeless people either have some mental illness or substance abuse issues that makes it difficult to acclimate, or integrate, into regular society.
I just watched some documentary about this homeless community up north and how the town was running it out into the outskirts of the town. Cannot remember the name. Gosh, it's late.

Wanna see a real panhandling problem? Travel to Portland, OR sometime. Dallas has NOTHING on Portland.

What I do when leaving a grocery store and approached by someone needing gas money, I say no, but let me call the police, they'll help you.
They walk away before I finish saying police.

NOLA has the same issues... What gets me is the same corners they stand on they litter it up with used soda cups from the local convenience stores, as well as other trash. Now I did see some cleaning up in my area, but I am not sure if it was done by the pan handlers or a city clean up crew....
If they would at least keep the areas they inhabit clean somewhat, and try to put trash in garbage bags ect. then I wouldn't mind donating a little to their cause every now and then.

I'm generally inclined to hand them some money if they have a dog with them in hopes that the animal will get fed.

I've been passing by a homeless war veteran that's been holding up a nice sign on Beltline and Preston.
Anyone else notice that he has a nice samsonite luggage bag?
Nevertheless, I am very skeptical of donating money these days. It's much better to give food or water.

The panhandlers in NOLA are hustlers. Ecspecially in the French quarter.
The little kids that work the streets run nothing but scams. I remember two little boys that came up to my friend and asked for a donation to their school's basketball team.
They basically had a white peice of paper with lines on it.
Now you now damn well . . .

The vet at Preston and Beltline is a hustler. Rode the bus across from him and his woman from the West End Station about a month ago. They just travel around the US panhandling.
I'm a sucker to give a few bucks.. often times its money I don't really have-- but on the flip side-- maybe they need it, maybe they don't... but I like to think that at least once out of every three or four times.. someone was able to eat thanks to me.
