Default It's sad that All of the Republican leadership in Congress refused to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Selma

Not one decided to go. Talk about a colossal failure of leadership. Looks as if they have no big tent afterall and it's likely why they'll never win the presidency again. They just dont know how to think ahead. I'm sure if we were commemorating the 50th of anything Jewish there wouldnt be enough seats for congressional republicans. If they cant get behind this effort to commemorate progress in America they are doomed. Very disappointing decision as they missed a real opportunity.

I guess they think the open hostility approach will work. Not even George Bush would condone this type of behavior and in fact he will be there. Kudos to president Bush he always showed true conservative compassion.

For the others who dont think like the President Bush who showed much grace toward minority groups shame on you. The perception like Maher said remains intact: "If you are a Republican you are not necessarily a racist but if you are a racist you are probably a Republican".

They didn't need to show.

George H.W. Bush is standing in for the Republicans. He can carry the water for all of them.

You make me look like a prophet. Expected and appropriate response from your side.

Carry on ;-)

Really?

He can't stand for himself anymore. He was only in Alabama to try and clear his son's military record.

Sad how you ridicule persons who are old and need assistance getting around.

My understanding his "son's military record was "cleared" when Dan Rather was made a liar by reporting as truth someone else's lie he failed to vet.

But at least his son produced official records ... you don't like them ... "official records" ... I know .. but that's the Government for you ... which you do like.

Is that why you voted for Obaminable? He doesn't produce records either.

Former President George W Bush will be at Selma, I doubt his Father could make the trip.

This is going to be an interesting scene. I am waiting to see who gives the best "it's still Whitey's fault" speech. The contenders are formidable, Sheila Jackson Lee, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton are all old pros when it comes to race baiting and poverty pimping.

But there is new combatant to the scene, who has proved he can out demagogue the best of them, a young up and comer, Barry Soetoro of Chicago.

illegal immigration proponents are glomming onto the commemoration as if their "plight" is another in the long history of white men's crimes and the struggle continues

the point is, anti-American politics rears its ugly head at every turn, creating resistance where none would be without politics

also all the racists in the dim party makes it difficult for fair people

Life can be a harsh reality and the truth like rain doesn't give a fuck who it falls on. Even though we have a long way to go your comment is a good first acknowledgment step.

Let me explain what makes me unique and you not so much. I came from poverty to wealth through hard work. I can empathize with the poor while also condemning the lazy within the ranks of the poor. I can also relate to wealthy whites while supporting the ideals of hard work and and unity at the same time rejecting the notion of racism and bigotry.

I'm uniquely qualified to speak on this issue because I can relate to both perspectives whereas you cannot. Your viewpoint in all things is very limited. Jesus had similar qualities in that he could relate to poor and to wealth. Of course I'm not comparing myself to Jesus but if you're a Christian which most republicans claim to be then the lessons of the gospels are totally lost on you guys. Much of what you espouse is hypocrisy run amuk.

you aren't unique

and you aren't qualified to judge where Jackie came from

don't attribute to yourself uniqueness

perhaps you should look up the word unique

the message of the gospel is that we as individuals have responsibility

Sure I'm unique just like you are; even elementary science proves that.

In addition to individual responsibility the message of the gospels also teaches compassion, understanding, sharing, and equality. The problem you have based on your 50,000 ft ideology and political platform is to generalize the effort and worth of entire ethnicities rather than individual efforts. You further compound your ideological positions with viewpoints that oppose and make a mockery of the gospels.

Yes I can confidently say I'm uniquely qualified since I made a conscience decision to look at perspectives from both sides based not on politics but personal experience. If Jackie S can boast such reasonable position I'd love to hear it. If not my position stands as not only fair but balanced as well.

Why should they?
You and your ilk would just call them hypocrites if they did.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. So fuck it!

I am just 2d generation American. My Grandmother was pregnant with my father crossing the Atlantic in 1919 as German refugees after WW-1. He was born down in "steerage" before they made landfall.
About all they had was a change of cloths.

you are using sleight of hand to cover your boast

honesty is required in any valuable discussion

additionally you attribute to me failings, of which, you have no basis to judge
