Disabling an account turns access off but handle, etc remain. Guesting changes the name of the account to Guest-xxx as well as turning off access. Even after guesting, other posts using the persons handle can still be found as guesting changes the handle, not references to it. Once its on the site, the content remains. Extreme cases may get treated differently but that would be very rare.

If you are trying to disappear and maintian some deniability if you have been outed or fear an impending outing, guesting offers a little more deniability and obfuscates the non-eccie oriented researcher.
As was noted above, anywhere your name is mentioned may still result in your name showing up in a search.
Disabling is good if you are taking a break from the board and might wish to have it re-activated at a later date.
I am not a mod, just offering some friendly information.

If you email the links to websupport were someone is referencing the handle that has been guested, it can also be changed to Guestxxxxxx.
