I meant this as a movie thread, but
belles lettres and high culture also follow the theme. It's an historical theme. This morning I am thinking of Verdi's
La Traviata, in which the courtesan Violetta makes mush out of a couple of her lovers. That opera is based on the 1852 novel La Dame aux Camelias, by Alexander Dumas,
fils. "La Dame" is Marguerite Gautier, a "demi-mondaine," that is, a courtesan. Dumas
fils was the bastard son of Dumas,
pere, by one of his courtesans.
