Default Looking for some advice...

I have a nephew who is a good kid and a college grad. I believe he did something business/logistics related. Long story short his interests changed and he wants to get involved in the whole oil field / gas boom going on here. He doesn't have experience in that field but can pick things up real fast. Anyone out there have any advice I can pass along? I personally don't work in that industry so I don't have the first clue what to tell him. He's moving down here from out of state very soon. Thanks for any input guys!

www.eaglefordshale.com they have tons of entry level positions with no experience necessary...as far as advice goes just tell him to start working out to be in tip top shape as some of the jobs can be physically demanding...as far as being a college graduate thats nice but doesnt really matter in this line of work..they hire felons and people with just HS diploma or ged

If he has a degree, I would have him put it to work.. I used to live in Houston, & could throw a stone & hit the Anadarko towers...

There are YEARS & YEARS of jobs in Eagle Ford..but if he has a degree I would get into management VS actually working IN the fields.. he may need to start there.. but use his BRAIN vs his back.

When I was younger I worked plenty of jobs in the oil and roustabout industry's....all that stripper money was great for a youngin... But was never usually home...since he has a degree, which I lacked at the time... I suggest something in safety, IT, management, or survey which are mostly salary positions... Unless he wants to make $$$ and work his way up on the rig doin 120+- hour weeks.... Great OT and most schedules are 2weeks on 1 week off.... Some scheds are even more flex such as 1/1..2/2...3/1 ... U get the jist...

Thanks for the tips guys. To tell you the truth even though he has a degree, I wouldn't mind seeing him get his hands dirty before getting into the office haha. Are those general job search websites worth it or should I tell him to apply directly to the companies? I remember seeing something on the news about job finding scams or something like that.

Thanks for the input, dj. Like I mentioned above, he's a young buck so I wouldn't mind seeing him bust his ass (figuratively) on a rig for a while before taking an office job right away. I used to work on merchant ships doing 18+ days, no days off, and doing shitwork. Definatly made me appreciate to job I got later on up the company ladder. I know he has some bills to pay so making $$$ would be good. Plus it keeps the X Box controller out of his hands haha. Where should I point him to get on a rig?

Don't know first hand but I hear things...Lewis En ergy is always looking for young, smart workers for the rigs. To get in shape, have him carry a cement bag through a muddy field about 30 yards and repeat about 100 times.

General comment: Don't let him hook up with a headhunter or service which charges him to find him a job. I've seen a few young folks in other industries who got roped into making payments.

We were quoted between 30%-35% of first year salary to be paid by the company within 90 days of hiring with no recourse if new employee quit or got fired in the first year when we considered using a recruiting service to assist in the hiring of an accountant. I don't know if their applicants pay them a fee also due to the fact that the conversation ended rather abruptly at that point.

Very true. Lone star college in Houston offering short course program to get started. Victoria, Cuero and Kenedy has lot of Oil Field happening. A lot going in as truck drivers get a CDL.

Be able to pass the drug test. Yep, they can't find enough people that can pass the drug test.
