Default Need help with getting around the Metairie and New Orleans area.

When I visit new places I like to get out and explore if I get the chance. We are here until Thursday and wondering where are the good local food places (seafood and tex mex) and where to go for nightlife activities. I like hip hop and dance music. Only looking for safe areas.

Any help would be appreciated.

According to my "from-here-not-come-here" acquaintances, there was ZERO good Mexican food here prior to Katrina. That's just what I've heard, having only lived here a short time. However, Juan's Flying Burrito serves good Mexican food & what I consider to be kick-in-the-head strong margaritas (seriously--I can't drive after one). There's one in mid-City @ Carrollton & Canal (the better of the two by rep) & one... Magazine St uptown I think? I love the pork & slaw tacos there, and when I saw that on the menu I thought that one of the cooks HAD to have worked in NC before going there--it's just a very Carolina thing to do to a taco. Everything I've had there has been good.

I'm also reliably informed (meaning by visiting out-of-state girls who should know) that the Mexican taqueria stand behind the Super 8 off Clearview is good. Don't know myself. I keep meaning to try it.

As for seafood: it's New Orleans. If it's a shack on the side of the road that says "seafood" it's probably pretty good. If it's anything else it's probably amazing. Deanie's in the Fr. Qtr. always gets high marks along w/Acme Oyster House. I prefer both to Drago's. All are pricier than a po-boy someplace, but all are good. Deanie's is actually semi-accessible for being in the Qtr. being right on the edge, so that would be my first try. Also, I love their crab-boil potatoes. Even though Drago's supposedly invented char-grilled oysters, I actually prefer Acme's. There's an Acme in the Fr. Qtr., but there's also one on Veterans in Metairie--you can actually find parking & they have, you know, ROOM there, so if you're staying in Metairie & don't INSIST on a Fr. Qtr. restaurant, you're getting the same great Acme food there.

If you want cheap(er) & quick(er), stop @ a "New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood" place. There are several on Veterans in Metairie & more scattered throughout NOLA proper including one in the Fr. Qtr. that I don't like b/c they don't serve the Buffalo Shrimp Po-Boy w/Slaw @ that one for some really odd reason. It's a good local chain for shrimp po-boys & fries. Don't make a date afterwards b/c you'll want to eat up the garlic sauce they dress the fries in.

Finally, if you're getting a po-boy & you're asked "Do you want it dressed baby?" say "Yes, please." That means lettuce, tomato, pickles & mayo. It makes po-boys about 1000x messier but about 5x as good. It's a valid trade-off. Parkway Bakery has the single best damn po-boys on the PLANET. If you're downtown (Central Business District aka "CBD") during the work-day for some reason Commerce on Camp St. is also quite good, inexpensive, and Thursday is Fried Chicken Day. Have fun. Can't help you w/clubbing--I'm too old for that.

Actually Pollo Campero is a Latin American chain restaurant that serves chicken. They have them all across Texas.

Thy are really good. I tried them on a trip with my friends to Nicaragua. I also remember when they first opened in Kenner. For the first month you needed to wait in a line of cars that started at Williams & Veterans. It was at least a 45 minute wait.

Try Superior Grill on St. Charles or the Velvet Cactus in Lakeview for Tex-Mex.

Seafood try Ralph & Kacoo's or Deanie's in the French Quarter.

There's also a Deanie's Seafood in Metairie, on Lake Ave off Veterans Blvd. As for clubbing, try Razzoo's on Bourbon St. Actually, there's many clubs on Bourbon that play hip hop & dance music. Have fun sweetie & stay safe!!

NOLA isn't really known for Mexican Cuisine, but there is a place in Metairie called Taqueria Corona that is really good. Another gem in Metairie is Dragos. They are famous for char-grilled oysters. AMAZING! Even if you aren't an oyster fan, you should try them.

Have fun.
