Default anyone knowelagable about car lots and how they operate?

Im asking because i bought a truck in november from a small car lot and my dealer plates are due to expire tomorrow.... Ive been up to this place and calling about them every day for a week now. They are giving me the run around saying everything from they aren't in yet they have been having issues with getting them on time their system is down blah blah

Now they are avoiding my calls all together -_-

Im no expert on these types of things but this does not seem normal.

Any suggestions/advice?

they should be able to give you some new temporary plates until your plates come in , but it does seem odd that you haven't got them yet. That's the risk you take when you go to a tote the note , best advice show up , be cool and ask if they in yet . If they tell you no then ask them for some new temporary plates to hold you over.

They can issue temporary plates up to three months in a row with a charge of $25 each time, getting the registration/new plates takes a trip to the tax office, sounds like they haven't done that.

Sounds like they are horsing around. Could be they do/did not have clear title to the vehicle ...

Small lots do it at times hoping to get the car back. They dont want to do all the legal paper work. One in Forney tried this shit w my ex husband and I in 04. I called the right Office in Texas and I solved the problem. They will probably keep giving you temp tags with no problem. If you need help finding the number to call let me know.

IMHO, first read this:
https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov...ying_car.shtml

Pay careful attention to your rights and responsibilities and then work to get everything you need to be sure your ass is covered (because it's hard to know what the other guy will do when you start pressing.)

Then instead of wasting your time and investing all that emotional energy (although it might work to sit there in person,) you should first call the attorney general's office and get advice without telling them the dealers name. I'm pretty sure they will tell you what I'm about to. Either write your own letter or if you have a lawyer client who will do it for free (it's not uncommon.) Don't argue, point fingers, etc, simply and politely inform them the facts (you don't have the title, you've called several times without success to get the title.) Inform them that they have 7 days from receipt of the letter to provide you the title or your next call/letter will be to the Attorney General. Then send it certified mail with proof of delivery. Assume this letter may be read in court so be nice and proof read it! This gives you legal proof that the dealer knows you don't have the title.

I bet that's all it takes. The dealer is on the wrong side of the law and most dealers don't want to risk loosing their license over one car.

From the AG's website:
After the Sale
Under Texas Law, the dealer is required to register and title the vehicle in your name within 20 working days, regardless of whether or not you owe money on the vehicle to the dealer or another financier. As soon as the vehicle is registered in your name, the dealer should provide you with the original receipt from the Tax Assessor-Collector's office.

And actually it may be the DMV you need to call:
(from http://txdmv.gov/contact-us?tab=5)
We investigate complaints against vehicle dealers licensed to sell vehicles in Texas. You can file a complaint whether you are a consumer or a vehicle dealer. For additional information or assistance with enforcement actions, call us at (888) 368-4689 or (512) 302-2474.

The last vehicle I bought took a while for the dealer to get the plates. He had purchased it at an auction and was waiting for the title from them. This is common for used car lots.

The plates came just before the dealer tag expired.

See if they will give you another set of dealer plates (I would not pay them to do it) and then follow Luv4Fun's advice if they don't follow through. Do get a good explanation why it is taking so long though.

That's good to hear. I figured that was the case... That, or auction situation. Most of those types of dealers go out of state to auctions and are waiting on titles themselves. Glad it worked out for ya
