Default NEWS FLASH!!!

ICE FCUKING MELTS!!!

AND SLAMMING YOUR BREAKS ON A HIGHWAY BRIDGE THAT APPEARS TO BE COVERED IN ICE IS VERY DANGEROUS TO YOU AND THE 20 OR SO CARS BEHIND YOU!!!!

Coast people! Coast! Or at the very least, DON'T BRAKE! WOW! I thought this was common knowledge.

This message brought to you by a native Coloradan who is still in total disbelief of what she has witnessed on the roads this afternoon.

I am happy to be home safe (and alive) now. Dear God! Lol!!!

It is fun to identify those whose driving habits are lacking and hang back until they meet a curb or guardrail. Then you can pass safely. I named 7 out of 10 Friday. 3 were amazingly lucky, but they white-knuckled it and slowed down (like they should have done in the first place).

I saw the same thing this morning and this evening. It caused the accordion effect on traffic over and over and almost doubled the time of my commute.
They did a lousy job scraping the bridges as they left snow piled up on the sides of a lot of bridges which of course does the partial melt and refreezes a nice glaze for the morning drivers to freak out over. You are right about coasting. Just don't hit the brakes, maintain a straight line and you'll be fine.

Don't forget that 4-wheel drive means nothing on ice, despite what southern highway warriors believe.

Idk.....I banked ($400) in 2010 pulling people out with my Ford 250 Regency 4x4 6in lift on 22" XMs. TETO...

Just don't cause accidents by being a dumbass... that's all I'm saying.

4WD doesn't matter on ice. If you pulled people out, you weren't on ice.

The false belief that 4WD matters on ice gets a lot of inexperienced southerners killed. Let's try to end that myth and save some lives.

Just close your eyes, aim straight and let the weight of the vehicle, momemtum, and ALL of Newton's Laws take effect and run with it! For the "No Child Left Behind" guys and gals, look them up. When it comes to driving on ice in lots of traffic, Newton's 3rd Law is my favorite, especially if you drive a 1970's POS tank of a car.

Everyone be safe and keep your stick on the ice!!!!!

I saw craziness on my way to DFW Friday (about 6pm). It was a two + hour ride (normally 30 min). People went too fast, 183 was horrible, and on ramps they would sometimes get a little ways up and hit their brakes and try to restart rather than go a consistent speed (top speed I took was probably 15mph whole trip). I took my 4matic and no, it really doesn't help much (when really on the ice) but I do understand what THN means about pulling people out because it works. If you are in a lane even with the ice and you're stable, it doesn't take much for your truck to right them back in line (slowly). I saw it happen often.

Overseas, my tires were studded at this point in the year. Some people had chains, but the law required studded tires (minimum) November-April. But hell, we were in the Artic Circle so it made sense. Thankfully Texas doesn't have this weather that often.

most people would be fine if they had a chance to test braking on ice and then realize how slow they must go and keep a safe distance from the traffic they follow. if you car gets stuck on ice, ashes, cat litter, even cereal will help gain traction. long ago when I lived elsewhere there was someone in a high end car who just floored it until his tires caught fire and so did the car.

No you're right it was snow on top of ice, but it did a whole lot better than the cars who were off in the ditch.

4WD won't keep a vehicle from sliding on solid ice. Nothing except chains will keep traction on solid ice and then only if there's enough weight. But it will help you more than a 2WD when ur stuck.

I can't imagine that drive SD!!! I'm so glad you are ok! Very very glad! That sounds awesome about the arctic circle tire requirements! Would those even be street legal in TX?? Lol

Another thing to keep in mind is ice flying off of vehicles. Do not get behind a vehicle if it still has a lot of ice on it.
I did not really think about that until someone I know had a wind shield busted today.

I did see that. It was wild. Just think if someone had been walking under that when it fell.
I remember hearing the woman's comment. "Holy freaking moly."
