Default Sports Question

Ok I have a question and I can't seem to find a straight answer online.

In hockey when its a tie at the end, I have in some instances seen them do a shootout and in other instances seen them do overtime with 4 on 4. How do they decide which end route to take?? Does it depend on the league?

Also, I have seen them pull the goalie when they were losing and put a 6th man on the ice. I there a time limit on how long that is allowed?

First, a team will pull its goalie when they are behind. This gives that team an extra attacker in the offensive zone (6 on 5) in an attempt to gain an advantage or a mismatch to score a goal. There is no time limit or specific time for when a coach may pull his goalie - it's a judgment call - but most will do it within the last 2 minutes of a game and normally if the losing team is 1 or 2 goals behind.

As far as overtime goes, and this is in the NHL in the regular season only, there is a single overtime period of 5 minutes where both teams have 4 skaters plus their goalies. If there are players in the penalty box, those penalties are carried into the overtime period (so a team may be one skater down during a portion of the overtime). All other rules are kept intact during this overtime period. The first team to score during the overtime wins.

If, after the overtime period expires, the teams are still tied, there is a shootout period. Three skaters are chosen to do a shoot out against the opposing goalie. The team with the most goals of the three shots wins the game. If, after the three shooters for each team have made their shots, and the score is still tied, extra frames are used until one team scores and the other team does not.

Where it come to the standings - if a team wins in regulation or in overtime, they are allotted 3 points. If the teams are tied after overtime, each team is allotted one point and the winner of the shootout receives the extra point.

About the only time things get thrown on the ice is when a player scores three goals in one game - known as a hat trick. Fans will throw their hats onto the ice. It's an old tradition. Throw anything on the ice at any other point and an usher will likely escort you out of the arena.
