That's a list of some really great movies. Question is, what's a "war movie"? I love Stalag 17, it's one of my all-time faves, but it's not what I consider to be a "war movie", it's a "POW movie", as are Bridge On the River Kwai (another favorite) and The Great Escape (yet another). To me, a "war movie" is about war, meaning battle scenes and the prosecution of war. Given my arguably overly narrow definition of "war movie", it's gotta be Saving Private Ryan, altho I put the second half of Full Metal Jacket right up there. To me, FMJ, which I have seen many, many times, is two movies -- the first (and better) half is a "boot camp movie", the second half a "war movie". That bathroom scene is harrowing every time I see it, even tho I know what's coming. Another war movie I'd put right at the top is A Walk In the Sun, a '40s film starring Dana Andrews. Still one of the best war movies I've ever seen. Where do you pigeonhole The Deer Hunter? So harrowing, I can't watch it again. I saw it during it's initial release in Manhattan, and when the audience left the theatre there was a total hush, no one spoke a word, none of the usual, "how'd you like it?" kind of stuff. Total silence. And, finally, Das Boot. I love submarine movies, and Das Boot is the gold standard of submarine movies.

I really like your analysis boomer49.

I think Walter would suggest The Big Lebowski is a great war movie, an extension of his efforts in Vietnam.

Tremendous movie, probably watch it every 6 months.

GJ, surprised Apocalypse Now isn't on that list?
